Getting possibly corrupted avi files to work

i wasn't sure if this was the right form (i also posted in the software one) but i was wondering if anyone knew if it is possible to fix a messed up avi file (won't play i get an error saying that "no combination of filters could render the file". And if it is possible please let me know how or direct me to where i can find out. Thanx
