University of Iowa is conducting a study on a very diluted version of the smallpox vaccine. It's diluted down to 1/5th it's normal dosage and they are testing to see if it's still effective. there's like a 1 in 1,000,000 chance that something might go wrong. I could get paid $300 to do it.

I'm really thinking about it. Would you do it?

I'd go for it.. how do they test the vaccine though? Subject you to smallpox or something similar?

The thought of dying doesn't really bother me. In fact it has a certain appeal at times. But I do believe I would feel pretty stupid as a lay dying of small pox, knowing that I did it all for $300.

One prescreening visit.
One visit for the actual vaccination.
And then another 4 visits over a 6 month period to do blood work.

Get paid $50 after the injection, and then $250 after the final blood work visit.

I should clarify better. The actual amount of smallpox in the vaccine is 1/5th the amount that is in the "normal" smallpox vaccine. So, I'd *roughly* have 1/5th the chance of something harmful happening than someone would have with the current vaccine.

They are testing to see if the less powerful vaccine is still effective in getting acceptable blood levels of antibodies.

Gotta agree. 6 visits and and a 6 month wait to get $300 is waaaayyy too much hassle.

I like the fact that it's 1/15th diluted but as others have recently stated this is a lot of hassle for merely $300.

If it were $500 or more I'd seriously consider it.

It would take a hell of a lot more than $300 for me to let someone stick a needle in me.

Heh. visgf and I are thinking of going in at the same time for all our visits, and nabbing the $600 for it. It'd make nice spending cash for our honeymoon next June :)

Add three zeros to the end of that price tag, then I'd do it. Almost everything has a price tag, that one has a much larger price tag for me. :D

Assuming it doesn't kill you.

Too risky IMHO - I'm not a big fan of injecting myself with one of the most deadly diseases known to man...even if it is dead and just to build up antibodies.

On the flip side, on the slim chance there's a biological attack on the U.S. with small pox, I'll be one of the lucky few who's already immunized...assuming that the diluted form is effective. :)

and...I'm sacrificing myself in the name of science :D

Statistically speaking...I have a greater chance of dying driving down there than I do from the vaccine itself.

I would probaly go for it. The 300$ would get me about a new Bodyboard, if I sell my old one for 150$. Id be game for it.

just do it

you get $300 for 6 visits.

I get paid $300 for 2 weeks worth of (part-time) work. Seems like you already have your mind set on doing it anyway.

Is $300 really worth it to find out 35 years from now you've got some kind of genetic disorder caused by their faulty vaccines? LOL. I know that's a stretch, but for $300, would you risk it? I wouldn't.
