Getting old sucks - threw my back out again

Felt very sore Friday morning from working out earlier in the week, so like any reasonably intelligent man would do, I grabbed the hedge trimmer and extended my arms. Probably a mistake. Spent most of Friday hobbling around and lying down.

Through the magic of modern medicine (note - Alleve does absolutely nothing, but Tylenol has done an ok job at keeping the screaming away), I was able to move around this weekend. So, again, naturally the only choice available to me was to purchase and plant another jaboticaba tree, mango tree, grape vine, and passion fruit vine.

As a certain knight in Indiana Jones once said... I chose poorly. Paying for my indiscretions today. Medicated myself with more Tylenol and managed to get to work, but I think that was probably also a terrible idea.

Need to take myself in for an oil change. Getting old is not for the young.

Ignore the pain. I think you may also need to clean the basement, haul a few heavy boxes of garbage to the dump. After you are done I think you have some logs that need to be manually split in the backyard. Your back will thank you soon enough

I'll be telling his wife. The 2 Danes would make short work of the parts she tosses them. "Jeeebus? Jeeebus who? Kids, your Daddy is working out of town.....for a while.":p

Didn't you just have this back problem or was that someone else? PT.

Probably someone else, though it's not like this is the first time. And it was the stupid danes that sealed my fate this morning. Walking them at 5am was also not a great idea.

Things just aren't the same today...

Get some good, sturdy shoes and walk your back troubles away.

I hear ya! My lower back is all sorts of hurt. I did some yard work (removing established sod with clay as soil is fuckin heavy!) Probably lifted slightly wrong, slept wrong and now I have pain. I can't sit and touch my toes or bring my knees to my chest without strong pain. :-(

Welcome to my life. My back is "permanently thrown out," and what you're going through today is a good day for me. :(

Not necessarily the right answer. Corticosteroid injections work for SOME things...for SOME people, but the steroid does NOT work within 15 minutes. That relief is from the numbing agent (lidocaine or similar) most likely mixed with the steroid in the epidural.
I used to almost live on those...every 3 months for several years.
GREAT short-term relief, but only 3-6 weeks of actual relief by the steroid. NOT long enough to justify continuing with the treatments.

Chiropractic adjustments MAY help...but alternating ice and heat works best for me when my back flares up. 15 minutes of heat, 15 minutes of ice, repeat as necessary.
Sitting in a chair is one of the worst/most uncomfortable things you can do when your back is FUBAR'D...

You want Advil (Ibuprofen) - it's a better anti inflammatory than the other two.

i feel for ya. last year i was putting on my pants and my foot got stuck which threw me off balance so in the process of catching myself from falling over and bashing my head on the dresser I twisted and pulled my torso. I felt two lighting bolts zap me in my lumbar and i was done. i was in the most pain i had ever and i mean ever felt in my life. i was out of work for over a week, my doc ordered an xray and my back looked like a S from left to right... going to the bathroom took 10 minutes and my wife had to help me get out of bed and walk the 15 feet. i went to work the next week but that was too soon, because my gait changed walking from the parking lot to my office my legs burned like i just ran 20 miles and were really really weak. it took about 3 months to fully recover from that.

ive broken quite a few bones, kicked by a horse or two, sprained ankles, been hit in the head but ill tell ya what i did to my back last March was a horrible horrible experience that i have no desire at all to repeat. i seriously thought i was going to be disabled.

This happened to me once: Was sitting on a flat dock with GF watching 4th fireworks, got to my feet suddenly and felt a twinge. Spent next 3+ days in bed, was almost impossible to get out. Nothing that bad since and that was 30 years ago.

I refuse to get old. I work out at the gym every other day these days, including stretches and a variety of core exercises, strength training with weights and machines.

I have ice packs in the freezer but rarely use them. I occasionally take some ibuprofen, it's rare. Almost never take an aspirin or tylenol.

I skate all over town, lately ride my road bike into the hills (over 1100' climb), multiple times/week. Only use my car when other transportation modes don't work.

I'm active. I exercise every day. I eat well, take a handful of vitamins/supplements daily (not sure they help, but WTH).

Fitness is a life style.

start drinking and then the pain goes away.

Fortunately through major Good Mornings and later Stiff-legged Deadlifts (and tons of nubile females), I have a strong lower back and no back issues.

My problems are some pain in my hands from punching mother fuckers when I was younger.

And that's just really one of those terrible ways of doing it. No war story. No epic tale of heroism. Just some pants.
