Anyone got experience in this before? I'm thinking about buying this car with very minor damage but its been salvaged and will need to fix a corner light/fender to pass inspection. well would pass inspection with just the corner light but i intend to fix it all.

Not much is wrong with the car just looking to see if anyone has experience on this. How much do inspections run? timely process or can it be done in a couple weeks or less??

I'm in Illinois if that helps but the car is in Iowa.

I thought it was once a salvage, always a salvage.

Yeah u can not have salvage removed from the title.

Yep....either accept it as a salvage titled vehicle or move on and find another car.

If your state allows it, most states once you do the repairs it has to be inspected by a state trooper/state police officer before it can be liscenced and driven legaly again.

there is a loop hole from what i hear. States like Alabama will reissue a new title for a salvage title. I dont know if they fixed that yet, but a couple of years back after teh florida hurricanes, lots of cars were sold as clean titles from an alabama title but in reality they were cars from florida with a salvaged title.

okay here is word for word what the seller has told me.

"In genereal its a pretty easy process. A salvage vehicle needs to pass
inspection and be granted a prior salvage title, a regular title, or
rebuildable title, depending on your state. The car will pass inspection in
the condition it is in right now honestly. They just check that the car
runs, lights work, wipers work, horn, no stolen parts, they just want to
make sure the car is safe to drive. You just need to know where in your
state they inspect salvage vehicles, there should be lots of places. After
the inspection they give you the paper you need, which you will then present
to the courthouse, and be granted a prior-salvage title or whatever. You
pay your taxes, plates and the car is then ready for the road. Not hard at
all, call if you wish me to explain it over the phone."

I guess I just need to go down to my DMV and ask them since laws will vary state to state. Why can't we all just have the same laws. We live in the same friggin country.

Are you buying it from a dealership or from a person who baught backa totaled car from the insurance company? IF buying from a dealer you should try and get them to register the car to you when they sell it to you. If from a person and they haven't gone thru the buy back yet you can avoid get a salvage title if you find a place to give a quote under the total line. You the insurnace company pays out what ever is required to "fix" the car and you buy the damage (not totaled) car from them and repair it your self.

I hope u know that the resale values of the salvage title car is also very low and its hard to sell them. So if you are planning to sell the car in the future keep this in mind. U might be getting a cheaper deal buying it now but u will get lesser money selling it too.

I'm buying the car to drive. I won't plan on reselling or trying to make any profit. Just want to be sure I will be able to legally drive this car. thats all. never bought a salvage vehicle before so I thought I would ask around 1st.

the vehicle is coming from a person who must've bought the car from the insurance company already. he sells lots of salvage vehicles on ebay. has all positive feedback 127 total evals.

Also check with your insurance company to make sure that they will insure it, not all of them like to insure salvage cars.

on a side note, i almost came close to seeing and buying this car with a off-lease, claimed total loss by the insurance, then failed inspection twice, rebuilt, then bought by the current owner.

i'd look at the records real close before you consider anything.

Tenth Amendment.

"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

Basically, unless the constitution explicitly gives the power to the Federal Government or the states willingly cede the power to the Federal Government, then the state gets to make the decisions.

Well technically true, yet the Constitution does not say the Executive Branch has a Cabinet that must be approved by Congress.

Plus there are so much more laws like the Can Spam Act and such, yet powers like that aren't delegated to them.

still need help here if anyone can. i wasted time today going to the DMV for nothing. they basically would only tell me I need to go through a "licensed rebuilder". But yet they had no list of these "builders" and didn't offer me anymore information after waiting for an hour.

I take it I need to have the car "inpspected" since it doesn't need any repairs and is road worthy but where do i go? what papers do i need?

surely someone out there has the answers for me.

except the Constitution gives the Federal government the right to regulate commerce, I do believe.

So ctcsoft has something of a point.

Every state has thier own laws about how to get these cars back on the road, and thier own definitions of the terms salvage title , rebuilt title, flood title and so on.

Finding out how may be as hard as doing the work on the car.

If you have State or Local inspections, you could start finding out how where you get your car inspected. My next stop would be salvage yards or Body shops where they fix cars.

In WV you drive the car to the DMV with pictures of before and after for thier records. In PA you take (not drive ) the car to the State police for inspection.

Hope this helps some

from that site. looks like i need to find a licensed rebuilder and maybe have it inspected????

"Rebuilder (A person in the business of returning a vehicle for which a Salvage Certificate has been issued, back to its original or operating condition.)"

Thats what the lady at the dmv told me. She mentioned i needed to goto a licensed rebuilder but they had no list of them and couldn't give any more info.
