Ok I talked to this guy I know in the car biz. I found this 98 Nissan Altima GXE. It has 72,000 miles on it. They offer a 6 year/100,000 mile warrantee. It's gone through their 128 point inspection. It's an automatic. Tinted windows(which I like ;)) It's a GXE so it's basically loaded, only thing is there is no sunroof. He said he'll sell it to me for $6,000 with 8-9% interest for 36 months with my mom co-signing. Which comes to about 200 a month. My insurance will be 110 a month if i get it. Everything is completely in my price range. So what do you all think? Any thing negative about this deal? Anything I should know about the 98 Altimas?

Yah, I really wanted a standard. I looked at a 97 altima which was standard but it was know where near as nice. Plus, i'm a tall (6'7") guy and my new was get caught in between the door and steering wheel when I test drove it. So for a car, an automatic is my best choice.

I would ask a trusted mechanic to thoroughly check out the car. According to KBB.com the private party value is $7,185 assuming the car is in GOOD condition.

Fair is $6,405

Yes, but unlike a domestic, it can handle the extra miles no problem :Q ;)

Yah, I'm definantly going to get it checked. But the price that they were going to sell it was 7999(so don't get to suspicious about the low price), but this guy is basically going to give me a huge break and really make no money for himself. OH and also there is the warrantee. :D

It sounds pretty cool but just a comment GXE isn't "loaded", the GLE model is the "loaded" version. I have a 95 Nissan Altima GLE I got in January for 5500 with Alloy Wheels, cd player, sunroof, tinted windows (Factory tint just like one you are looking at probably), etc. I love it man. Good luck with it! :)

Automatic part does suck but otherwise it seems like a decent buy. Considering the price that many miles is nothing to be concerned about - especially since you have a warranty for another 28,000 miles.

That interest rate doesn't seem bad considering the age as well. If I had to guess I'd say you'll buy it and get some good years out of it.

Plus nissan rocks but you already knew that.

Yah, Nissans do rock. :) Uhmm, I think some of you all are confused though. It's a 6 year/ 100,000 mile extended warantee from the date I buy it. Makes it sound sweeter huh... :D

Sounds like a great deal to me. They're great cars. Very reliable, and one of the cheapest imports to repair if need be. It's got a timing chain so you've got a good 40k miles before that needs to be replaced. It's probably due for a tranny flush if that hasn't been done yet.

FWIW- I've had my '94 Altima for almost 6 years and have had minimal problems with it. The only expensive thing to croak was the A/C a couple years ago. It has otherwise been a very reliable car to own. From what you've described, this seems like a very good deal. :)

I also wouldn't say that it being an automatic is necessarily a "bad" thing. I've never been very happy with the clutch on mine....it's not slipping or anything (108,000 miles) but it's just annoying. It has a relatively narrow range of engagement and just doesn't have a very positive feel to it unless you get the shift precisely right. Don't know if they've improved them on the newer Altimas tho. Just my 0.02

Actually, if I read the owner's manual correctly, the timing chain is supposed to be good for the life of the car.

Can i hear a little more about this warranty. I myself assumed it was an extended warranty. Did it automatically come with the car or did you have to ask for it, or did you get it from a seperate place that deals in ext. warranties? Also is it bumper to bumper for parts, if so do you have a deductible?

Nice buy! I drive an 02 Altima SE, and I love mine. Is the 98 as large on the inside as the 02? I thought they added a few extra inches in the new model?

Congrats, and I hope it serves you well in the future. You can now join the local ATOT Nissan owners' club. :)

Actually, if I read the owner's manual correctly, the timing chain is supposed to be good for the life of the car.

I wouldn't trust that too much. While it is a non-interferance engine(meaning you won't fubar it if the TC breaks), you can still run into problems if it gets loose. I don't beleive that any part in a car is "maintanence free" :)

Sort of like GM bragging that their cars are "maintanence free till 100,000 miles". Yeh, and then they promptly die. Meanwhile, the guy with the honda/toyota who's spent a couple bucks here and there every 20,000-30,000 miles has a car that runs 250+ thousand miles.
