I'm planning on getting a gig of ram for christmas I was wondering what I should get.

System Specs:
(Was once a POS Compaq)
Using the compaq format disc, deleted all of the dumb stuff (everything), is there really a need to get a new copy of Windows XP Home?
I bought a new mother board: Asus P4P800 SE
I also bought a new video card a while back: Nvidia GeForce FX5900
Currently have 512mb (2x256) generic brand ram.
120GB Hard Drive
CDRW
DVDROM
480Watt Thermaltake PSU
Acrylic Case
5 Fans
Generic Floppy
SB Audigy 2
Wire Management (Including Braded Cables)

And I'm looking to buy ram and wondering what kind I should get, looking to get a gig of the good stuff for gaming. I like to play Doom III and Counter-Strike 1.6. I was also wondering if I should buy a new copy of Windows XP Home or just keep the compaq reformat discs and use those and delete all of the uneeded stuff whenever I reformat or anything? Help me out please! Thanks.
