Alright folks.

I have an athlon xp 1700+ that I think I am going to try to overclock as high as I can. I figured I would probably go out and buy 400 mhz ram, just to play it safe. I probably wont get my bus speed that high (since I cant change the multiplyer on my board) but I'm going to get 400 mhz ram anyway.

Do you have any ideas about which brand I should get?
Does brand really even matter, or can I just buy the generic stuff? I'm kinda cheap, so I definately wouldnt mind getting the generic if that worked fine.

Any ideas?

Brand matters. That said, here's my short list of vendors I trust: OCZ, Kinston, Crucial, Mushkin, Geil, Kingmax, Corsair.

If you just want OC, and your target is to have your PC running at 400Mhz FSB/DDR sure you can buy cheap memory, furthermore if you'd like to increase the overall performance with low timings, get Corsair XMS series.

Why basic 3200, and not better, cost?

very little difference between basic 3200 and high end 3200, that is if you are not overclocking.

yes, cost. i am a poor college student. 400 mhz memory should be plenty fast enough, especially since my processor is only 266 fsb, and i just plan on doing a little overclocking.

Got OCZ PC3200 performance gold myself. I have to recommend OCZ just because they have a lifetime warranty(or did have) and RMA'ing ain't a problem. Bought a stick of OCZ 512mb and it was dead. OCZ RMA'ed it no questions asked after telling them it gives constant errors in memtest86. They didnt ask for proof of purchase or nothing. Got it back within a week and a half. If you live around CA then you will get it quicker.

Got my 1800+XP running at 200FSB@2.3ghz@1.75v@turbo timings and its solid. Hope you have as much luck.

I'd just buy generic since your CPU is at 266 FSB now.. it's not like you will ever see 400. Generic will work fine @ these speeds... I run generic in 2 of my PC's at home and never a problem.

personally I would at least try to get some decent memory no matter what. Wouldnt it be nice to be able to use the same memory when/if you buy a 200FSB CPU? What if you want to o/c that CPU? You will have to buy all new ram because that generic can't go past 200FSB(if it will even hit 200FSB). If you buy some decent stuff you should be able to pass 200FSB by messing with your timings.
