Getting new 8 week old kitty today....list of stuff I should get?

I'm sure some of you have read previously how my 13 yr old cat just died, well im getting a new kitty in honor of her. 🙂

But anyway, what should be some stuff I should get? Like food that she has been eating, scratching post, litter box, litter, maybe some toys.

Also, at night we used to put my cat in our basement to sleep, cause she liked a specific chair down there. We have a motion sensor alarm that my parents all are paranoid about and need to have it on at all times, so the alarm never played a big deal for my previous cat cause she slept down there all night. But anyway, where should I have my new kitty sleep? My other cat never was detected by the sensors, unless she knocked something over. I don't know if I should have her sleep in my room or just let her roam freely. Any ideas? I can't turn off that dumb alarm though cause of my damn parents!! :frown:

de-claw the kitty while still young.

Water gun would be fun to play with.

Dont declaw the cat, especially if you ever plan to let it outside. declawing is a waste of money

DO declaw the cat if you don't want it to jump up and claw you in the balls.

Yes, and cats love fire too. WHAT THE HELL?!?! 😛

Your kitten isn't likely to sleep in any one place for the first 6 months or so. Kittens are also chock full of hyperactive energy, so expect it to be up at all hours, scampering madly around the house. You could confine it to one room at night, but if you do make sure to give it plenty of stuff to play with and to remove all the breakable stuff from the room.

With regards to toys I find kittens love fuzzy things, and red things. (don't go with all red toys though, as all cats are slightly different) In particular I find that a red puffball on a spring with a weighted base at the other end will keep them occupied for quite some time. Wal-mart sells some toy mice, usually made from some generic fabric, that most every cat I've had love. And you can't go wrong with laser pointers; kittens love chasing that little red dot.

Get the kitten some Kitten Chow, and also some grass. (like the lawn kind) Cats eat it for the nutritional requirements they usually get by eating mice. ('cause mice eat vegetables, and the cats then eat the mice)

Don't declaw your cat, ever. You can simply trim/dull the claws with ordinary nail clippers once every few weeks, which will make little tears and such a lot less common. If you do it regularly when they are young they won't mind it nearly as much when they are older.

Oh yes, get a spray bottle or squirt gun for disciplining the kitten. Usually shouting "no" works, but for really bad stuff -- like walking across the stove -- water bottles are damn effective.

Don't declaw your cat, it's cruel and a tacky, bourge thing to do.

...My sister had all 3 of her cats declawed when they were little. Those things were the most loved and loving creatures ever.

When I decide to adopt some kitties, I will probably opt to keep the claws.

don't declaw. clip tips

if you absolutely must declaw your cat, wait till you get it fixed. you can declaw while it's still drugged.

lots of loving is a must if you want a frisky kitty. otherwise, it'll grow aloof

I was probably going to have it done at the same time, that's IF I decide to have it declawed. Her foster parent says that she doesnt seem to claw anything except for the scratching post so far...

Declawing a cat is akin to cutting off your fingers at the first knuckle.

Also, if a declawed cat ever runs away it can't survive. :frown:

Why not remove a dogs teeth so they can't bite you while your at it?

I just had my fiance's 9 year old cat declawed 6 days ago (used laser surgery). Inside cat, never gone outside.

Nothing wrong with it.

Our cats favorite toys were the Sparkle Ball things. Basically tiny little balls with like sparkly tin foil type things sticking out. They go nuts for that.

Get a scratching post (I prefer the flat once you hang on the wall). If you have a big house, you might want to get 2 litter boxes in case the kitten is far away from the litterbox and needs to go. Can get rid of it later then.

Have fun.

EDIT: If there are multiple available from the same litter, I would HIGHLY consider getting 2 so they can keep each other company and play while you are away at work or whatever. They do like company and affection and can get that from his/her brother/sister very well.

I would never have just one any more.
