Getting Negative in the Network Forum

Lately I have noticed the rude replies to threads posted by people, in particular, to the network forum. Back when I first joined this forum, no matter whether your question was silly or didn't make sense, people still replied with helpful comments or at least tried to decipher the question. Maybe I am wrong here, but if you don't like the question or think it is stupid shouldn't you just keep your rude comments to yourself and move on to the next thread? I don't have a lot of examples but here are two threads in particular (one being mine) where I noticed this happening.

Here is my thread, yeah the question is stupid with the leet words in it, but it is still a friggin question!! If you notice all the replies I received maybe one or two of them were people trying to help.

Today I was in the network forum browsing around when I noticed this thread. I read the guys question and all the replies. Here again he just gets reamed, if you will notice, by some of the same people that were rude in my thread.

Heck I didn't even want to post in the network forum again after that and Im sure Endarkened doesn't want to either. The other day I had a network related question for a particular application. Seeing what happened to my last thread and others I decided to put it in the Applications section of the forum, instead of the network section. I knew this proabably wasn't the right place but I figured I would at least get some helpful replies here! Im not trying to be a tattletale or cause problems in this forum. I just wanted to make everyone aware that this was going on and get incite from other's opinions on this matter.

I'm aware of the 2nd thread you are talking about, sure I even posted in it. As was pointed out in the thread though is that people who do this as their job get frustrated by other people coming in trying to find out how to bypass what they are setting up. It generally isn't done with proper permission and it many times leads to screwing things up, hence the number of people that jump in pretty much annoyed without even answering the question.

As for your original post... well I didn't think the first few replies were really bad at all, they pointed out pretty clearly that you might be able to get fired for what you were trying to do at work, which is a legitimate concern. My opinion which isn't worth all that much is that you overreacted, then the thread went downhill fast, but its not something really worth avoiding an entire forum if you had other legitimate questions. Realistically if you went to your top boss and explained how you were trying to use company resources to setup public game servers they would probably tear you a new one, maybe not but the majority of them would, thats what they were telling you.

Frankly, if Endarkened is upset with the responses he got, then maybe he'll think twice about posting a question about circumventing security at his school.

As for your own post, I happen to work in a public library and FULLY support the comments about tax-payer waste. We clamped our network security down for the same reasons - the difference here is that if we find a staff member trying to play ANY games on the network, it's grounds for dismissal! ;)

the responses seem warranted.
maybe not what you would expect but certainly within the reasonable realm of anandtech when it involves shady practices.

the responses in your thread seemed even cordial considering the lack of info you first supplied,in the future it may help if you post the entire question rather than throw out part of the info and not get offended when obviously the subject you were inquisitive of is a sensitive issue that you should be well aware of. ignorance is no excuse.

i am not saying your views are unfounded just that misunderstandings happen due to one party or another leaving out vital information and as you stated you are guilty of this,so you should also be more understanding of the pointed views that your incomplete post produced.

hope this helps

Thank you for your honest and serious replies. I will take into consideration what you have said the next time I post.

P.S. I was a little thrown at that tax payers comment. I never said it was a public school :)
