Getting my old system back up and running

It's a tyan-via motherboard with an intel 800mhz, old stuff. Basically I'm getting a new HD, new monitor, new case, and new ram (stuffed the old ram into my mom's pc when I built my new pc) so I can have an additional PC running. This puts me at around $200 counting shipping. (I'm in TN now so I have an additional 8% newegg sales tax. dammit.)

And it'll be pc 133 168 pin sdram for the motherboard. I'd get a new one with ram but that would add around 80 dollars, and what exists is adequate. I'd be happy to buy an old 10gb harddrive from another anandtech user though, since I don't need or want a full 40gb. Then again, all of the items aside from the ram will be useable when I make a new fullpowered system.

This is just to give me an additional boxen running for the minimum possible price. I have spare mice/speakers/keyboards to drop onto it once assembled.

Any comments or tips?

Hooray oldskool...

Honestly, it's really refreshing to see someone who doesn't need 7800xt 512's in SLI.

Except for the case and the monitor, scour both the FS/T thread here and eBay. If you're buying these components "new" you're going to get ripped on the price.

Good luck!

I hate ebay. I only want to buy from here, and I made a FS/FT post around the same time you made that suggestion.

/me unshares brain from the DMZ

I have a whooooole lot of random hardware crap that I'd like to sell, think ananandtechers will buy?

You might be able to trade for some of the components you're looking for...especially the hard drive.

Sounds good to me. I'll start a For Sale topic up with pictures there shortly, you win a preview of my writeups:

Logitech speakers. They're getting old. I think they might have some buzz to them BUT if someone is seriously interested I will hook them up and test. For a 'parents pc' they would be perfect. Not exactly Klipsch 2.1s, but decent quality. The sub is not going to give you a serious bass kick but it will add some mass.

Flatty speakers. Well, these came with a soso 750 duron from a computer show in 2001, so you can guess the quality level. Surprisingly decent for the little flat drivers, but the main sub leaves some to be desired. Uses RCA cables for the satellites, surprisingly. Overall, decent.

I really don't like these speakers and neither should you. You may have them included in your order free of charge. First come, first served.

Car speakers. I really don't know WTF is up with these.

Car speakers part deux. Came with a car cd player. Am considering having them installed in my ride to replace some dead speakers, though.

It's a 2000 era digital camera, the battery flap is broken. Give it to that seventeen year old niece so she can whore pictures of herself onto the internet in exchange for the attention her parents never gave her.

Notebook PCs. Years ago, friends of the family gave me these Gateway Notebooks. I'm pretty sure they are DOS only or something. But I digress. As a kid, getting these was the coolest thing in the world. Then I discovered that they were BIOS password protected and the former owner had forgotten it. One of them has a loose latch due to years of opening and battery removal. These notebooks have defied every logical process for BIOS reset, be forewarned. Help me exorcise my bitter childhood dissapointment by giving me money for these things.

VCR. It works. Now you too can enjoy the earliest form of pirated television broadcasts, in their grainy, half quality VHS quality.

DVD player. It works, except for the fact that the disk tray will not extend from the unit. My uncle went over it with a circuit tester, although I forget the verdict. Solve the mystery, and a lovely DVD player may be yours. Or, use it in combination with a pair of anklecuffs for a safe and effective toddler detention device.

Radioshack Amp. Doesn't it look lovely? It can be yours!

Keyboards. I tried and tried to think of something witty to say along with this. I'm sorry. So very sorry.

Microscope. It does, in fact, work. I guess a kid could have fun with it, or look at bugs.

USBtvThingy. I may or may not have a dongle missing. You can find the software online for this. Use in conjunction with the VCR to play videos on your PC. The possibilities are endless as you transcribe your old VHS porn onto modern MPEG compression!

Mini Shark Vacuum. I am almost positive that they hock these on infomercials. It is a champion if you need to vacuum a very small area. In fact I think I will find out how to attach it to little brushes and use it to vacuum my computer parts. Never mind, you can't have it. (unless you really want it and will give me money)

Xerox Copier. This works. Don't expect super quality and you'll be happy. In great shape except for plastic discoloration on some parts. Only problem is that the toner cartridge will need cleaning from time to time, or before-due-time replacement, lowering the quality until you SPRING INTO ACTION.

Wireless G pci card, with disk. I plan on using this but it can be yours.

Yer killin me. You should def. be able to pull a 10gb hard drive for a couple of those, shipping would probably be in the other person's favor though.
