I am going to couple this with a GTX 465 video card and get another 8 gb of RAM from newegg or wherever else is cheap. I just needed some cheap ram tomorrow so I could put this rig together and play with it.

I guess that fully unlocked 4ghz pII x2 wasn't cutting it eh? :p

My wife was using an old AMD single core.. She wanted something faster and I would spend a few hundred upgrading her, or 500 upgrading me. :)

What's wrong with the 465? I'm looking for something around 5770 performance in the 140-150 dollar price range. The reviews of the 465 I've seen on newegg looked good and its faster than the 5770 and cheaper. What would you suggest?

Anything but GTX 465 :D GTX460 is faster and a lot cooler + much less noise and power draw. GTX 465 have all the disadvantages of GTX470/480 and no performance to leverage those.

According to anandtech's benchmarks, the 460 and 465 are just about equal. The 465 is faster than the 460 in some and vice versa. Where the 460 shines is power consumption and loudness.

The cheapest GTX460 1gb is $162.XX shipped. I can find the GTX465 for 137 shipped, both from newegg.

Almost a 30 dollar difference....

Yes they are, at reference clocks. :) But you are right about the price thou, if 30$ difference means that much to the OP (against more noise, heat and power draw) then he is good to go with 465.

I guess GTX 465 was selling before GTX 460 came up - I could have bought GTX 465 for 30$ cheaper than HAWK (Leadtek GTX465) but I didn't even consider it...

Was it not the 465s that sometimes could be unlocked to become a full 470? If so, it might be worth it.

Yes... on rare occasions and I think only a couple vendors. I think PNY was one of them. It isn't anything like the Radeon 6950 unlocking to 6970, where there is a near 100% success rate. The GTX 465 => 470 was a very low (but real) success rate.

After researching some more, I'll wait for the 460. I do appreciate all the information in helping me change my mind on the card.

what resolution are you gaming at? gtx 460 768mb is only $93 at TD AR right now. they are awesome performers if you're at 1920x1080 or below, and they OC at least as well as the 1gb cards. they're so cheap now that I'm thinking about coming out of the closet to try some sli.

I game (when I can) at 1680X1050. In addition to 1/4 less memory, their bandwidth (GTX460 768 mb cards) is also cut, right? 192 bit vs 256 bit is what I've read...

^ Correct on the memory size & bandwidth differences. These shouldn't be too much of a problem at 1680x1050 though... (unless you are addicted to high AntiAliasing settings ;) )
