First of all, I'm not sure what you mean by "open it up", but if you mean to literally open up the router then you were mislead. Opening it up will not do anything.

If you are timing out in games when plugged in directly to the modem, then you have a problem with your internet connection--call ISP.

If you have *more* problems when plugged into the router, then you may have problems with the router, in addition to the modem. you can update your firmware fairly easily by visiting Linksys's web page.

Edit: By the way, from reading your post, it sounds like the guy who came out to "fix" things didn't do anything, and just placed blame elsewhere--this is nothing new.

Got the tech's name who told you that? If so, file a complaint... like Tizyler said, he didn't do his job... either he didn't know what was wrong, or just didn't want to accept that it's Comcast's problem and take the time to fix it so he told you it's not his problem. There are hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people (me included, and I have Comcast HSI) using that router with no issues. You MIGHT need a firmware update, but you definitely DON'T need a new router.

tizyler i called my isp and so far they have sent 3 people out and all have said the same thing, and i cant get them to replace the modem because whenever the guys come out they say the smae thing

Keep asking to talk to managers until you get one that's willing to send a competent tech out to fix the problem.

*EDIT* The monkeys they send out on most service calls usually aren't that... informed. I know a few of them in my area personally. I go to school with them... and I get better grades than them. 🙂

Make it simple on them. Things to do:

1) Update your firmware on the router. It is easy to do. First figure out what version of the router you have (look on the bottom on the big label, it will say something like WRT54G v1.1, v2, v3, v4, v5, v6, etc., etc) Then go to linksys.com and go get the correct firmware for your router and update it. Your router may even have the automatic update capability too (just log into your router's webpage and go to "Administration" and "Firmware Update"...

2) Remove the router from the equation when they arrive. Don't have it there. Tell them that since they told you before it was the problem that you got rid of it.

3) Wait for their next excuse.... (next one will be it's your network card/PC).

it wasnt in the equation today when the guy came but he plugged it through my router because my speeds seemed ok to him..than i showed him the tracerts ive been doing and he said they mean nothing......and by open it up i mean make the bandwith come through instead of bottlenecking inside...i dunno i called again and they just hung up on me..it is rediculous
