I'm at the same crossroads, but the choices don't involve products from different manufacturers.
Here's the sequence of events:
1) was using a 2 x 1GB kit of Crucial Ballistix DDR2-1000's
2) One or both modules went bad, because even if I wasn't over-volting them, I was volting them right at the warranty max.
3) Already had a set of Crucial Tracer DDR2-800s brand-new, and replaced the Ballistix with those
Between (1) and (2), a family member had asked for suggestions per Xmas presents, and I suggested a $50+ kit of Crucial Ballistix DDR2-1000 2 x512MB -- thus boosting my memory to 3GB capacity, without needlessly losing RAM to the way XP Pro/MCE 32-bit handles it.
But the Ballistix 1000's are rated at 4,4,4,12 to 2.2V at 800 Mhz, and 5,5,5,15 to 2.2V at 1000 Mhz. The Tracers are rated at 4,4,4,12 to 2.2V at 800 Mhz.
Even if I OC the entire 3GB, I should be able to choose timings and the speed adequate for the Tracers 2GB kit, and obviously, there would be no harm to the Ballistix 1000's. I might have to move the voltage up a notch, set the command-rate at 2T, or even loosen the timings just a tad. But I shouldn't have to do more than one of those things.
