getting into counterstrike?

okay, i dont understand the whole damn thing.

basically, there's steam, it controls downloading and updating of games attached to it...right?

as for buying individual games, a cd key for any specific game works for all games that use that engine... like a halflife cd key works for DoD / Counterstrike (and you can dl them free), and a CS key works for DoD/halflife...etc... right?

so, concievably, i could go to the store, purchase DoD source (20 bucks) and then download CS source (30 bucks) for free? as well as any other half life 2 engine games?

i just want to make sure of this before i go waste money...

DoD and CS were free mods for HL1 and they remain as such

DoD and CS for the source engine were never released as free addons

There are two types of bundles for the source engine that I recall

HL2 + HL2DM + CSS
CSS + DODS + HL2DM

Then there's also DoDS by itself for 20

Obviously you want the CSS bundle as it includes all of the multiplayer games

okay, i think i just ****** myself over.

i decided that hl2 + everything was too expensive, so i bought hl1 anthology, thinking it'd give me counterstrike..or at least the ability to download and play it. but i cant seem to figure out how in the hell to do that, and i'm thinking that it doesnt work like i thought it did anymore.

this is pissing me off. how the hell do i get counterstrike?

Well there is a retail package at Walmart for $30 that includes CS:S, DoD:S, and HL2DM. If you're looking for multiplayer only, this is the best deal. To get HL2 or other stuff like their back catalog, you'll need one of the Steam or larger retail packages (not sure exactly here, since there is a lot and they've changed slightly).

I paid $60 for HL2, CS:S, DOD:S, HL2DM, and the whole back catalog (HL1, CS 1.6, etc) the day CS:S came out. I think I got a pretty good deal. 😛

im assuming you bought it at a store not from steam. register one of the CD Keys that came with HL1 anthology with steam, and it'll let you download any HL1 based game on steam.

HL1 anthology came with only 1 key. when registered, it registered as "halflife 1 anthology", and only included the 3 mods that come with that. team fortress, blue shift, and something else.

browsing games through steam takes me to counterstrike's page, where i can *buy* counterstrike for 10 bucks, or get another anthology for 20 bucks which includes CS, DoD, and another game.

Well I played very old versions of CS and DoD up until the newer ones, but I really like the Source-engine ones MUCH better. Again, I think the $30 retail deal for CS:S, DoD:S, and HL2DM is the best deal out there for multiplayer gaming. CS:S and DoD:S are worth at least $20 each to me. But yeah, I did the $60 Steam Silver back in 2004... one of the best game deals ever, cause all of the games are still excellent and have many hours of playtime ahead!
