I'm trying to get into the car scene and it's hard work. Engine swaps, brake swaps, coil overs and shocks and struts, it's just too confusing. Who ever said having a hobby was fun?!

What was the point of that? Now nobody is going to think you're old enough to own a car.

Eh, you'll learn cars pretty quick, just hang out on forums, get yourself a shop manual, and read stuff about your car.

You won't learn the particulars right off, such as the fundamentals of the actual engine itself, but you can learn what everything does, how its all interlocked, and how to replace it, troubleshoot it, etc.

I got my car in March. I joined 3si.org in April. I knew absolutely nothing about cars, could barely do an oil change, when i got my car. I just finished my 120k Tune up involving tbelt and accesory belt replacement, water pump and oil pump replacement, and valve stem seal replacement. The car started up right away when i finished.

It's rewarding.

Cars are a difficult hobby to get into. It is very expensive and you have to have good tools or you are wasting your time. It was much easier back when I was a kid becsause a lot of fathers worked on their own cars and brought their sons up to do so also. Unfortunately this is not the case much anymore. When I started I had my dad's tools to use and then he bought me a set on my 16 birthday. I have been collecting tools and cars ever since. If you are serious about getting into the car hobby it might be best to join a club dedictated to the car of you choice and hopefully you will find a mentor to get you started. I work with young people all the time because they do not have dads that are into cars. I have been helping two young men (19 years old) build their first mustangs over IM for almost two years. One live in Concord CA and the other in Salt Lake City while I am in Houston. I also help the kids in my neighbrhood. You best option is going to make friends already in the hobby first and go from there.

What kind of cars are you talking about anyway?

That is a great way to turn into a total social loser in life. Games are fine in the evening when you have nothing else to do before you go to bed but they are not, well should not, be a way of life.

Not to mention it's also a good way to incite the OP to do somthing classy like say something desparaging about your mother.

doing brake swaps is NOT rice
replacing shocks/struts is NOT rice
Coil overs are NOT rice...

wtf dude.

I completely agree with what Ronstang said. im lucky my father has a fairly decent stash of tools, and if he doesnt have what i need i just head over to a friends excavating shop and get almost any tool needed.
