Hi, i have a windows 98 machine and i put an ethernet port in, connected it to my router and i cant figure out why im not getting any internet to it. TCP/IP is installed and that is set to obtain ip address automatically. Other than that, what settings do i need to mess with to get this working?

check to make sure that the NIC is installed properly. someimtes with 98 i believe you have to reboot after installing new hardware.

go to device manager and check the NIC if there is a red mark or a warning symbol then you need to fix that.

if your NIC is fine then make sure that your router is setup for DHCP, otherwise you will not get an address. or you can manually input an ip address that's similar to your routers

router = 192.168.0.1

your computer

ipaddress = 192.168.0.5
subnetmask = 255.255.255.0
gateway = 192.168.0.1

dns 192.168.0.1
secondary = your isp'd dns

let's do this,

turn off power to all devices. cable modem, router and computer. then turn them all back on in that order. give the modem a minute before you turn the router on. then after the router, turn the computer on.

what ip does it give you?

if you are getting a good ip then try doing a dns flush.

i'm not too sure what the comman is in 98, but 200 and xp it
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns.

ping your routers ip address. also, what type of internet service do you have? do you have all of your protocols installed? install netbeui for the hell of it. when you ping the router and it doesn't come back with 100%, then maybe you have corrupt drivers, bad hardware. change your cat5 cable, that could be your problem. let us know what it is.
