My 6600GT only has DVI-I output, but all DVI cables I seem to come across are DVI-D.

Even for me, all of this is just pretty confusing. I thought all DVI cables could carry HD video.

How can I get play movies that are up to 1080p from my computer on my TV?

The 6600GT is far too slow for 1080p output in the first place. That's the bad news. The good news is that a video card that will support 1080p and DVI-D is relatively cheap, particularly if you have a PCI-E slot.

All of the below will run 1080p (if you have a halfway decent CPU, there's someone here with a Sempron and this GPU running 1080p perfectly), and all have DVI-D, and most have HDMI.

Silent Asus Radeon 3650 PCI Express for $55 :

Palit Radeon 3650 PCI Express w/HDMI(!!) for $55

HIS Radeon 3650 AGP 8X w/HDMI for $79

dvi-d cable should work with dvi-d

look closer to your monitor cable to the video card, it should be dvi-d.
