Getting garbage in Excel 2000.. help!

Hello!

My father's computer is getting garbage characters when opening excel files in Office 2000. Back when he had Office 98 he never used to have this problem and I can't figure out what's causing it. This also happens when I try to open the file on our computer at home. My father does international business so there is a possibility of the file using a foreign alphabet; although I have already installed the proper alphabet onto Windows 2000 because he is able to type them just fine. Btw, the information seems to be there but its just not displaying properly.

Any suggestions?

Example of garbage:

binary application/octet-stream attachment
name="BLAH BLAH.xls"
filename="BLAH BLAH.xls"
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿýÿÿÿgy

Did you try doing a "SAVE AS" on the files to remove the
saves, editing data that gets tacked on?

You may be surprised on how small some of the files get afterwards.

Yea I just tried saving it as an Office2000 xls and an older xls file.. neither worked and both reopen the same way.. any other suggestions? I have no idea what could be causing the problem! I told him it might be possible that the file is corrupt but he said its happening when he tries to open a different person's xls files also.

If someone wants to try to open it themselves I can email the file over!
