My MIL has been running Ubuntu for three or four years without a hitch. A couple months back flash quit working, and I can't figure out why. I've tried the flash updater, it crashes every time. I tried installing Mint, all the same issues. I'm at the point of buying a copy of windows to get the damn thing working, but that will mean nonstop misery for me always having to solve windows problems.

Any ideas?

You're getting Flash from the repos, right? Dunno why it would suddenly quit working.

No idea whats up. I tried installing and have the same problem, it says flash needs to be updated but none of the 4 methods I've tried will work.

Someday I'd love to come across an OS that just works. I've reached the point in my life where I pretty much despise computers. I've wasted an entire day on this piece of crap with nothing to show for it.

I'm on Mint Debian and they often don't update the repo fast enough for me. I frequently download the 64-bit Linux .tar.gz version from Adobe, extract the libflashplayer.so, and overwrite the existing libflashplayer.so files with it. `ls -lF /etc/alternatives/libflashplayer.so` may tell you where the file that needs to be overwritten is.

After pulling my last hair out, I realized that it's only flash on the Xfinity site that doesn't work. For some reason it detects it as an old version.
That's a problem because the xfinity site is what my MIL uses as a portal for email, videos, old tv shows, stuff like that.

Is there any possibility that by calling Comcast I'll get the one guy who could fix this on a day that he feels like doing something? It's probably going to be a lot easier to just get a new MIL.

I wonder if you could block the js that detects Flash, or spoof the version. I don't use Flash. It's not on my home system, and only on the work machine "just in case", but disabled.

It seems like Linux has become a lot more complicated. When I set up my MIL's system a few years back it was simplicity itself. Now it seems to require a great deal more study, interaction, and tweaking. It's possible, perhaps even likely, that my tolerance for this sort of crap has reached zero. I think I'm simply going to dump linux and install windows. I have no expectation that they system will be any easier to setup or maintain, but I won't have to study arcane gibberish to make it work.

Ubuntu saved my mother from getting scammed by "Windows support". Removing GNU/Linux would be my last option for a computer for the non-savvy.

There is that aspect of it as well.
I may just tell here that the internet has been turned off.

As much as I *hate* the idea, you could try Chrome browser. Installing spyware to use crapware is bad policy, but if Flash is essential(sigh...), it may be worth a try.

Tried that, didn't work. Xfinity see's the wrong version of flash, I can't figure out why.
I installed Mint cause it looks a little more polished than Ubuntu, and told my MIL that she simply can't watch xfinity tv on her computer. Sometimes it's best to cut your losses and walk away.

Is there a specific error that it gives when you use Chrome? If anything is going to work it should be Chrome with its more up to date PPAPI version of Flash.

Oh, that could be an Xfinity bug, or an Xfinity requirement. Adobe stopped upgrading Flash on Linux at version 11 or so - they just do security patches now. Windows is up to version 15 or 16 or something.

Version 19-something, at present.

They still update the PPAPI version in Chrome so it's curious why that one doesn't work.

No idea why it doesn't work. Xfinity doesn't support Linux, so I can't get an answer from them. I gave up as it wasn't worth the effort. It works perfectly everywhere else, and even short videos on Xfinity play, it's only xfinity tv that fails with a message that say's "You need to upgrade flash, Xfinity tv requires version xx.xx". It then lists the version of flash running on her computer, which isn't the same version number she has installed.

You can probably fool it by using the ppapi flash path and version launch options[1] by just pointing it at the bundled one with those options. It should report the version you specify if it's actually just complaining because of a version mismatch.
