We'll I'm leavin the dorms! Yea! And now off to an apt with my roommate. He's moving in in the beginning of May, and I'll join him at the end of August. The apartment is unfurnished....where should I be looking for furniture? I realize used stuff is pretty plentiful, but in addition to that, are there factory outlet stores or something?

thank you for the information. How about where you go to school, city and state? Much easier to say.

When I first moved into my apt. it was Ikea all the way. I can't think of many other places to furnish an apartment new for a couple hundred bucks. :p

Don't spend money on furniture for your first apartment. That money is better spent on a very powerful stereo system.

Cinder blocks and other bricks you can find. Any old lumber works wonders. Mattress on the floor. Use an old cable spool for a table.

Also, don't stock up on food. It will just go bad in your fridge and it takes up too much room that should otherwise be occupied with beer.

watch the side of the road. You can furnish a whole room in about one month of being observant.

Denon AVR-1601 Receiver. PSB Image 2B fronts, Image 8C center and Alpha A/V surrounds.

Need I say more?

Ikea and Cort are both good ideas. Goodwill and other thrift-type stores are good, too. If you buy from Ikea, be prepared to make love to the alan wrench.

I got the furniture for my first apartment from friends and by cruising the dumpster. People always throw away furniture at the end of a semester.

My reply is serious, OK?

Used furniture is not really the way to go. Maybe end tables/coffee tables ok, but anything with cushions should be purchased new. Mites, ticks, silverfish, roaches, ants and caterpillars are just a few of the possible "tenants" you might find in used furniture with cushions. :Q

Laugh if you want, but about 1/2 my furniture is the "put it together yourself" kind. If you do a good job; tighten everything securely, use the glue where it tells you to, etc and take care of it, it'll last you a good long time.

My entire bedroom set is DIY and nobody can tell. :) The advantages are obvious:

DIY nightstand: $75
Same one already assembled $150

what is ikea?

It's a Swedish furniture store basically. It's huge. Their stuff is so cheap because you have to assemble most of it at home (super easy to do though).

Where do you buy DIY furniture?
I agree with you 100%. Fine to buy tables and desks, dressers, or other solid hard furniture used. But cusions, no way. I might consider buying leather furniture if it's in really good condition from a respectable person after careful examination, but definitely not cloth, it soaks up everything, and easier for pests to penetrate.
