Getting fillings replaced - anyone had it done?

Ryan

Lifer
When I was a kid, I didn't take care of my teeth and now have some nice, large fillings in my rear molars - seeing as I had them filled on a military base, I never had the option for white fillings. They can't really be seen unless I open up my mouth really wide.

I was thinking about having them replaced with white fillings - anyone ever had multiple ones replaced?

I've had it done, but not by choice. My teeth started to crack from years of chewing ice, so I had to get some nice white onlays

I haven't had any replaced, but I did have a filling fall out. (The tooth eventually cracked and right now I'm missing a tooth.. gums are still healing internally)

EDIT: I will get an implant for the tooth when my gums are healed.

I had my tooth colored fillings replaced with silver fillings.

My dentist told me the pain I was suffering was from using tooth colored fillings which are bad for people with sensitive teeth. He totally berated my previous my dentist for even suggesting them to me. Since I got them switched, I haven't had a problem.

White fillings are not as good and don't last nearly as long. Most dentists will urge you to not get them. Some might even refuse.

Go GOLD. And dont skimp on price, or youll be sorry down the road. Get the best ones. 18 Karat dental gold. They will last a lifetime.

You might want to consider switching to another dentist. 😕

The dentist I have now won't even use amalgams, because of the obvious health problems associated with mercury toxicity. I've never heard before that sensitive teeth aren't compatible with white fillings. 😛

Rubbish. These "Most" dentists you speak of - do they light fires by rubbing sticks together too?

My dentist is a third generation dentist and a professor of dentistry at Columbia. I think I'll go with his opinion.

my fillings were just replaced a month ago. My old ones started to rot out.

You can't even see the discoloration when I smile.

I had - but only by necessity. I had some metal fillings, and as one of the molars started to hurt, I went to the dentist. It was an infection, so she removed the filling, put some temporary "medicinal" filling, it hurt again, she broke the temporary filling and put one with a flow channel, then removed and put a normal filling, then removed it again and put the final internal filling and some photopolymer thing. It took some 5 or 6 visits 🙁

I also have (had) a mouthful of silver fillings done on at military dentist as a kid.

a month or so ago my dentist started replacing the ones that are failing, but she will not replace the ones that are still good. It's my rear molars and it was brutal (done in 2 separate appointments). and yes the white fillings are much more sensitive and hurt for days (actually 2 weeks or more of constant pain for me as these were very deep fillings in my rear molars). On my second trip she had to write me a Rx for vicodin it was so bad.

i had a similar deal with my molars, but my old filings actually fell out.
my dentist was going to do an "overlay" ,but ended up going with 3 crowns do to cracks in the teeth
