ok, im going to be getting dsl soon and need alittle help as to how i should set it up so i can share the internet connection.

im actually transfering my dsl from one place to another. so i have the necessary hardware: Alcatel Speed Touch Home DSL modem, Linksys 4port router/switch, filters, etc... I also have a linksys 10/100 5port switch (thanks to the Hot Deals forum for such a great buy, $18 after rebate) and a Netgear 10base-t 4 port hub.

the place im moving to (my parents house for the time being) is networked where each room has a single rj-45 jack which all are centrally connected to the garage where the router is housed.

the thing is that their is not phone line out in the garage. so the only way i can see it working, is if i have the dsl installed in one of the rooms so that the modem and dsl router using up the WAN port and 1 LAN port). then use the uplink lan port connect that from the wall jack in the room, to the garage connecting that to one of the LAN ports on the 5 port switch. thus using the existing 4 ports of the switch to connect all the other computers to share the internet connection...

sorry if this is alittle unclear, im just having a hard time imagining how to hook this up in my head. im sort of a newbie at networking.

first, will this work? and 2nd if it does work, will i notice any speed lose? id appreciate any advice. thanks!

looks confusing, but I think its pretty simple (and will work fine)

If I read it right... the phone line that the DSL is running on comes into one of the bedrooms where it goes into the WAN port of the DSL Router in that room. Then the Lan Port of the Router goes into your wall jack that runs to the garage where it gets to the hub and distributes out the attached cables to the other rooms where computers are...Will work fine...If you wanted a computer in the room with the Modem, put one of your hubs in there...So Router Lan port to Hub. One Hub port to computer in the room and another hub port (or uplink port to so you dont need a crossover cable) to the wall Jack (that goes to other hub in garage)..

davisdog: yeah, that's what i was trying to say... you summed it up much more nicely than i could have ever... :)

actually, i have already a pc in the room ill probably put the dsl line in (closest to the garage switch). only bad thing is that my linksys router is the 4 port flavor so ill have 2 ports sitting idle. i would (since i can get a hold of alot of bulk cat5 cable from a friend) to just rewire the whole house so that central switch area would be in one of the rooms, but my parents paid alot of $$$ (like $70 per outlet) to get the place networked when they bought the house.
i dont want them to feel like they wasted their money on it.

thanks for the help!
