Getting Connected?

My family already has a computer connected to the internet through a cable modem. I recently bought a computer and have it in my room. Is it possible for me to go through the cable line that's in my room with a completely separate cable modem instead of using a router and having lines throughout the hallways? Do I have to tell my cable company or will I just be connected once I install the modem?

a second modem should work, youll have to set it all up with the cable company though since they usually use MAC addresses of your network hardware (cable modem) to allow you access

and with that, theyll probably charge you at least a few dollars more a month, depending on the company. i almost think that cox allows 3 connections per account (dunno if other providers do anything similar)

and welcome to the forums!

In that situation, cable companies usually require you to have a 2nd account and pay double the fee. With a 2nd modem, you have the potential to use up twice the bandwidth your account is allowed. Cox for example allows you to have 3 IP addresses per cable modem for use by 3 PC's in your house without having to use a NAT device, but you cannot have more than one cable modem without paying double.

Each PC needs its own IP address. If you are using a NAT device (Cable/DSL router), the device allows all of the PC's in your house to share the IP address your ISP gives you through address translation but each PC has it's own.
