I work for a fairly large company.

I just started like 2 weeks ago, and they have already called me in 4 times (only answered the phone once).

Would it be bad to take the call and simply say "no, I don't wanna work."?

Only if you want them to fire you.

most companies have a policy where they can get rid of you within the first 60-90 days, if they dont like your performance, dont think your a good fit.. etc.

If you want to be fired... sure.. go ahead and tell them "i dont wanna work" ... they'll easily see to it you dont.

Wait ... are you "on call" as in ... you need to fix the server? Or ... are they calling you like "Joe called in sick today, so we need another person here to man the drive through, can you come in today?"

If you're "on call" then that's part of your job.
If they want you to come in on your unscheduled day off because some slacker didn't show up, then it's up to you to decide if you want to go in IMO...

I had a very long talk with my son a couple of weeks ago because of just this kind of attitude. I don't care what the job is, if you are willing to take the money, you do your very best at the job. It will be noticed and you will be successful. If you want to flip burgers for the rest of your life, then just continue doing the bare minimum and that will also be noticed and you will be flipping burgers when you are 72.

I'm going to take the opposite approach to "precedent." If you set the expectation that you are available 24/7 for work, it can be abused. You don't want to be a jerk who won't help out if there's really a need for it and other people are helping out too, but you can't let people take advantage of you. You'll end up burning out really quickly.

We've got an on call policy that if you are on call you must return the call in 15 minutes and be at work within 2 hours.

If you are not on call then it's best effort if for some reason it hits the fan and they need me.

Being on call sucks but we schedule it so you know when you are on and when you aren't pretty far in advance.

If you don't like you're job I'll take it. Thousands of people out there won't be baby when they have a job.

I'm gonna play devils advocate here and take another stand.

He's the "new guy" ... he wants to make an impression on his boss that he's a team player.

When it comes time for the company to trim the unnecessay employees... you WANT your boss to say "we dont want to get rid of him... he's flexible".. as opposed to "he always refuses to come in.. he's not a team player... we can do without him"

need to know what you do and what the on call is for. if you are being called in because someone else is out sick as stated earlier, then by all means just say no and that you already made plans. if however, you have a company cell phone or pager and you are the ON CALL guy, then get your ass to work and do your job.
