Getting AT&T@home service today and was wondering if there's anything I should do before they install it. Do I need to backup any files? Do I need to download anything?, etc.

Nope - they will install a Nic, maybe some software (any software they install isn't needed - the DCHP will just assign the NIC an IP) and thats it.

Well, yes! They should have told you that a backup was mandatory. In your case, just backup the registry to the desktop. They will want your system disk also. They may want to use USB with an adaptor since they won't need to open the box, but a NIC is faster.
If you are able to choose, I'd pick the NIC.

I'm very pleased with AT&T @Home service. Now we won't go into their lousy long distance service!:D

I precabled the house before they arrived (since for free they only would provide one jack), but it's too late for that, I guess.

It's probably overkill, but do backup basic files before they start:

In Win 98: start > run > msconfig > general > create backup > ok

Watch as they install the hardware and software, in case you have to do it yourself later for some reason. Get full instructions and manuals, CD's etc. as appropriate.
