Getting back into the upgrading game... A couple opinions would be appreciated!

My current rig is a 1.2 Tbird w/768MB PC133 on a MSI K7T Pro2A and a GF3ti200. She has given me 2+ years (3?) of rock solid performance. Even now it isn't *too* bad, but some of my current games start to push it and its age is starting to show (IL2 - Forgotten Battles, for example).

What I am thinking about upgrading to is this:
P4 2.6C (800)
Abit IS7E
1GB RAM (2x512Mb DDR SDRAM Ram Module, PC3200 - DDR memory for 200/400 FSB)

My present case is a big tower with a 300W Power supply that has been fine with the TBird. Hopefully, it should be OK with the P4 too? I plan on using the onboard sound and lan.

As well, I am planning on keeping the GF3 for a while yet. However, if I do, will the system be so grotesquely bottlenecked it won't be much better than the 1.2 unless I get a newer FX/Radeon or something?

Price is a concern as we are trying to save our extra pennies into paying off our mortgage!

Good selections, I'd wait till December for the NV40 . You'll be able to see how fast it really is, & it will also drive down the prices on the current top end cards. The only thing I'd add is a Antec 430-450 ps.

Also what hard drives will you be using ? (Raptors)

Regards,
Jose

Does your Power supply have the P4 plug?

Some of the older ones don't have that extra little plug the P4 motherboards need.

I wouldn't say it would be "grotesquely" bottlenecked by a G3; but you can definitely do better. 🙂

RE the PS - No extra "plug". I was wondering that too. I've seen things about P4 "ready" PS and didn't know if it was just a wattage issue or an actual hardware thing. If there is an actual plug that it requires I guess I'll need to pony up a few extra $$$ for a newer supply.

As for my hardrives, they are nothing special. I think they are just a couple of 2+ year old Western 30GB ATA100 that were the run-of-the-mill around time that I built the TBird system. I know they'll be slow nowadays, but they have enough room for me for the time being. I can pick up a HD pretty much anytime so it's not a huge concern.

Well your hard drive will influence your response time.

While your hard drive is chugging along, your new fast processor will be waiting for i/o ..

The slowest link in a pc is the harddrive. Not counting floppy access. 😉

Good Luck
Jose
