Getting audio through HDMI cable from a HD4870

I am having difficulty getting the audio to work through the HDMI cable on my roommates computer. He is running Vista64 Home Premium.

I got an open box Saphire HD4870 for cheap, and then bought a DVI-to-HDMI adapter directly from ATI in order to get one that has audio output. When I plugged in the adapter, I get a warning message from Catalyst Control Center that the adapter does not have audio capabilities. Is there something I can do, or was the adapter we got from ATI not good for audio passthrough?

Has anyone on this forum used the HDMI audio output from the HD4870? If so, was there anything special you needed to do to make it work?

It has to be the correct adapter (regular DVI-->HDMI won't carry sound).

HDMI sound only works on one of the two DVI ports, so try the other one.

You have to select the correct audio device in Control Panel-->Sound.

With the message you're getting, I'd guess you either have the wrong adapter or you're not using the correct DVI port.

Thanks. I will try the other DVI port. I don't doubt that it is the wrong adapter, but I hoped that it was correct since I bought it directly from ATI just for this reason.
