Hey all..I posted this a while back in general and didn't get much if any response...let see how it does here ;)

Sad story...my most up to date build is an old P4 2.4 Ghz, 1.5 gigs of RAM, and a GF 6800 non-ultra vid card. Just havent built anything in forever...(mostly cause I'm broke)

Anyway...my buddy is giving me a HP XW8200 workstation that he doesn't want.

Dual Xeon 3.4
2 GB RAM (PC3200 I think)
some Quadro FX3400 vid card
and I think the PS is a 600W
there's only one PCI-E slot I think, and unfortuneatly only like 2 SATA slots

Going to get another 2 gigs of RAM

Transplanting what I can from my old comp into it. My old vid card is AGP though.

I'd like a rec on a vid card to put in this thing for some decent gaming if it's even possible. But I don't want to shoot the moon on a card and have it be limited by the processors in the end of it all.

Thanks

What do you mean by decent gaming? What resolution and what games?

The decent low power cards, HD4770, an HD 4830, a 9800 GT or a 250 GTS are all going to consume around 150 watts at idle and 200-250 under load. With the 4770 on the low end of the power requirements. I picked up a 4830, after rebates, for under $70...

I believe that your quadro card draws about 100 watts and requires the same single 6 ping power connector so, you will probably be OK.

You'll probably end-up being bottlenecked by the CPUs and might be able to step down to a 4670 or 9600GT, but it is a big step down

Where in the world did you get these power numbers from? A 4770 consuming 200-250 watts?!? Not a chance.

Anyway a 4770 or 4850 would be nice on that system.

.

It seemed high to me too... Please feel free to post your own

That's total system power consumption, not the card.
