Getting an excerpt from an AVI file with VBR encoding

I want to get a few minute clip from a larger AVI file that was encoded with XviD and VBR encoding. If I use VirtualDubMod it tries to rewrite headers when I open it and fails, then can't show video and usually crashes before I get anything useful done.

Any suggestions? Thanks!
