Yeah, I'm getting one of these for free from a friend who has a connection to AMD.

Currently I'm running an Intel P4 2.6ghz and I know I need a new motherboard of course. So my question is, what board is recommended for this processor? I also currently have 1gb of PC3200 RAM from Corsair...can I use that with the new processor?

I can not help you with those shopping suggestions but I moved from a P4 2.4 to the AMD 64 3200+ and the speed difference was astounding.

Sorry but the current Athlon FX chips use Dual Ch Reg memory. You will need to get some of that.

As for boards if you want TRUE Sata ports then go with the Asus SK8V . If you want a nForce3 chipset board then look at the Gigabyte GA-K8NNXP-940

Those board go for about $200 each.

Take that chip which retails for $732 on pricewatch and sell it on E-bay at $400-$450. Then buy yourself Asus K8V Deluxe and Athlon 64 3400+ with Zalman CNPS7000 cooler and save $$$ on unregistered RAM and a cheaper motherboard while you are at it.

However, one advantage of the FX processor is the ability to adjust the multiplier so you could always consider watercooling and pumping that baby to 2.8ghz. ;)

Thanks for the tips so far...while getting it free is great, I just spent $$$ upgrading my computer two months ago with the new processor, moboard, and gig of RAM...so I'm really not lookign forward to having to drop a couple hundred to upgrade again.

I thought about ebay or selling it here and using the money to upgrade my video card to an ATI 9800 XT (currently have a Geforce 4 ti4600) And I thought about just holding on to it until I am ready to upgrade again...

I like that selling it idea. Price/performance 64fx sucks... 350% more money for 20% more performance? I don't think so. get Athlon 64 3000/3200 or better yet just keep you system and bank the cash.

Yeah, had I gotten this before I just did my big upgrade, it might be a different story...but I could put that cash to many other good uses....
