Hey guys,

Tomorrow, I shall finally be getting hooked up with 512k/256k ADSL. Early reports from people with the same service indicate pings in the region of:

  • 30-60ms for Counter Strike
  • 20-40ms for Quake 3
  • 30-50ms for Unreal Tournament

I'm just wondering if anyone knows of some console commands that I should be inputting to get the best out of my connection in game. Also, how do I detect packet loss, and how do I see a real time update of my FPS in Counter-Strike?

As always, thank you for any help offered. snow :)

well snowman, you can go to tweakfiles.com & go to their networking section & download some cable/dsl speed boosting programs or you can go to speedguide.net & go to their patches section, you can check your cable/dsl speed at computingcentral.com by choosing speed test. i tried the cable patch at speedguide.net & at http://www.tweak3d.net/tweak/cable/ the guy highly recommends you download the @home cable patch even if you aren't using their services, well from my experiences, that @home program lowered my scoreover by 28% on the speed test but i didn't notice any speed difference in loading webpages, i tried the speed patches dated 4-25-00 awhile back & now I tried the ones dated 9-22-00, & all these programs are probably suppose to speed up your webpage loading times, but for some reason, once you install it, it always lowers your speed test score, & sometimes it takes longer to login into websites. when their finished installing your dsl, i suggest you go to computingcentral.com & do a speed test there, if you're happy with the results, i don't recommend you use any of these patches, if you're running winme, you don't need the patches at all because it's fast enough, if you're running win98se, you shouldn't need it either, remember, not everyones recommendations are right for you, decide for yourself, only if you aren't happy with the results from the speed test, then use the patches & do the speed test over again, & when you get less happy from the results of the patch & notice it kinda slowed you down a bit, you might end up reformating your computer & install win98 over again or you could go into the registry & change the settings back yourself, which is more dangerous for people that don't know what their doing in there. final note: software priates aren't bad, support the lengendary software pirate Guybrush Threepwood, he's coming to a store near you!
