I have a Seagate ST12250N (2GB Barracuda) on an Adaptec 2940W card, (yeah, they were both pulled from a P90 :) ). The drive is useful in the system but doesn't need to be running all the time (and is the noisiestthing in my system). Is there a way to make it go to sleep until needed?

I belive Adaptec had a feature like that in one of there mini-drivers disk sometime back but I never used it, I know there is other drive programs out there that can set this feature indipendently but finding ones that are compatible with some of the newer OS's not sure.

Normaly its the whole line or not at all.
Also on this note Ive seen the SCSI Zip drives had this feature in there software but I never had to use it since it was asleep after only moments anyways.

The following is from the Help file with Adaptec's EZ-SCSI 5.0 Explorer Interrogator application:

Overview

Use the Adaptec Power Management application to save electricity and reduce wear on your SCSI disk devices by automatically powering them down when they are not in use. You can specify a time of day for devices to power down and power up. You can also power them down if there has been no mouse/keyboard activity or no device activity for a specific time. Devices that are powered down will power up automatically when you try to access them.
The Adaptec Power Management application supports SCSI hard disk drives and SCSI removable media drives. Your drives will power up and down at the desired times regardless of whether the Power Management application is running.
