Getting a refund on an opened video game that is bad

On Friday I bought a new game for my Xbox 360: Blazing Angels.

It's a lousy WWII flying game (that could have been easily improved dramatically). I played it for an hour or two before I stumbled across a bug. I couldn't finish this mission because after sinking 2 of the 3 ships I was ordered to sink, the game threw me into a biplane that circled the city while my wingmen pleaded with me to save the fleet. There was nothing I could do. This stupid plane kept flying circles.

I tried several times to finish the mission different ways, but always the same result.

I jumped on the internet and found that many, many people had the same defect. This is not the kind of bug that happens from a scratch on the disk, it was a bad build that (apparently) got released in some quantity.

The next day, I took the game back to the game store and asked for a refund or a trade for a different game.

...

edit: click through for rest of story.

i think policies like that are ridiculous.
you should be be able to return a game base don the sole reason of "i don't like it'.

why should i be stuck with some piece of garbage that sucks or doesn't work properly.
at least the company who made the game should refund you for it. take some damn responsibility for your product.

When I worked at EB Games a few years back, our policy was that you can exchange the game if you didn't like it within 14 days as long as you had your receipt. They've since changed it to the "exchanges only for the same item" policy. Thank god MS has the Xbox Live Marketplace to download demos before I pop down 60 bucks for a crap game nowadays.

Ah the double edged sword of the xbox live patch downloading. Now games can be released for the xbox 360 that aren't finished, just like on a real PC!

abused the system? how do you figure?

I worked at an EB Games for a few weeks and that particular store had a few guys who just abused the 14 day return policy like mad so that EB Games was their own personal free rental store. They'd buy a game, play it for 14 days, return it, buy a game, play it for 14 days, return it, and on and on.

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!

Mmm...I would say most people would just use Hollywood Video or Blockbuster Video for that. It's a lot cheaper than paying 50-60 bucks per game along with the hassle of returning it and changing it out for another one.

i thought he meant they abused the 360 by playing it too much and now the systems aren't working.

but by "system" i now see he meant return policy :D

Damn , I wanted to buy that game too after playing the demo on XBox Live. I loved Secret Weapons Over Normandy on the Xbox, it seems like almost the same game.

I brushed against one of these "policies" recently too. I went into Gamestop last weekend to pick up a copy of MLB 2K6 for the 360. The guy at the counter told me that many people were returning them due to a freezing glitch in the 360 version. He went on that this was a problem with the game itself, so bring it back and exchanging it wouldnt do me any good. He then went on that for $3.99 extra, they would "allow" me to return the game for 14 days no questions asked. So you have to "pay" for your right to return defective products now ?

I was pissed off at the general idea, so I went and rented it instead. Good thing I did, it plays like a turd. If I had paid $60 for it I would have been really pissed.

He's lucky, most of the time they will open the other copy of the game, then hand it to you, so it's once again, an open copy
