So i'm getting a ps3 soon and I'm looking for suggestions on a game or two to pickup. I'm really thinking about getting God of War Collection as I only played about 1/3 of the way through the first game and didn't play the second game. Has anyone played through these?

Getting the PS3 because my recently purchased blu ray player isn't working correctly (have already exchanged it twice). Excited to be able to play some of the solid games that come to PS3 that I can't play on my XBOX360.

In the PSN store I'd recommend these:

WipEout HD
Super Stardust HD
Shatter
The Ratchet & Clank game if you are getting the two retail releases.

You may also want to check out the Pixel Junk games, a lot of people love those.

Killzone 2 is an amazing FPS experience. The only problem is that the aiming controls are all fraked up. I have a Fragnstein PS3 mouse controller, but on Pad it is hard. Maybe try first. If you can handle the aiming... it's one hell of a ride and is my favourite PS3 game.

Uncharted and Uncharted 2. The second one really stands out and is much better, but if you want a complete experience in the series the first isn't too expensive.

LittleBigPlanet is a wonder. It's especially awesome with multiplayer. Make your friends play with you. Even if single player only, it's a treat. 2D platforming fun.

Valkyria Chronicles is a fun strategy RPG. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I like it. Anime style, but if you can muster that it's pretty good.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma. Only if you didn't play Black on the Xbox 1 because it's basically the same. I like this series way better than Devil May Cry, and even a bit better than God of War (Gameplay wise - they cannot possibly match GoW's epicness).

Then there's Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 which is a revision of the 360 NG2, more than Sigma was it really is a lot different (easier, but new characters, bosses). I've always been disappointed in the lack of Ninja Gaiden interest when they are so much better than DMC.

Flower.

FLOWER.

WHY DO YOU NOT HAVE FLOWER YET????

Flower is possibly the best PSN game. You play as a flower petal and collect more by controlling Six Axis. It's $10. It's relaxing, fun, pretty graphics. Kinda short, but it's a unique experience.

Echochrome is a unique PSN puzzle game based on perspective. It's a puzzle game in the same way that Portal, Braid, or World of Goo are. By this I mean not Tetris, but an alternative game that can only be described as a puzzle. What you see is what you get in this game (perspective alteration), and for $10 it's the other must have (alongside Flower).

Shatter is another nice PSN game. As an Arkanoid fan I enjoyed it. At $8 it's a hit on the wallet small enough to be worth taking.

The God of War Collection is amazing and I've played both games all the way through on the PS2 already. I sold my PS2 versions once I got this one, as it is far superior. You also get a code for the GoW3 Demo from E3 as well. Well worth the money.

Other games:

Flower, Wipeout HD, Blast Factor, Final Fantasy VII, Castlevania SoTN, and Marvel vs. Capcom 2 on the PSN.

Heavenly Sword, Little Big Planet GOTY Edition, Metal Gear Solid 4, God of War Collection, Motorstorm Franchise, Ratchet and Clank Series, Tekken 6, and InFamous would be good starters for disc based games.

Welcome to the family. :) Man, there are a lot of great suggestions in this thread. Do you want specific PS3 exculsives or just games in general? I'll assume exclusive stuff for now. Here is what I can add:

God of War Collection: In my opinion this is a must buy for anyone who is a fan of action or action/adventure type games. The price you pay for the sheer amount of gameplay is a great deal. I love the story, the action and production quality all around.

Metal Gear Solid 4: It's heavy. It's long. It's cutscenes are long (and not nearing the rumored 90 minute length), but if you head into the game knowing what you're in for then you should enjoy it. Plus, it's the best gameplay/controls in the series.

Pixeljunk Monsters, Pixeljunk Shooter and perhaps Pixeljunk Eden: All around the $10 mark. Check them out on youtube to see what the gameplay is like. My personal favorite is Pixeljunk Monster because I'm a sucker for tower defense games and their spin on it is great!

Games already mentioned here that I fully recommend as well:
- Demon's Souls
- Uncharted 1 & 2 (Play both despite the fact that Uncharted 2 is better--one is still great and worth your time and $)
- Valkyria Chronicles
- Flower
- Echochrome
- Super Stardust HD
- inFamous
- Demon's Souls

Demons Souls, MGS4, God of War collection (if you haven't played either/or yet). Those are the ones i've recently played since I bought my PS3.

On the back burner I have Killzone 2, Infamous, and Uncharted, which i've heard are also must haves for the PS3.

Don't forget the MLB series.

This. I got MLB the show 08 by accident from gamefly (it was in a rainbow six vegas envelope...awesome). I hate baseball, and thought it was a total loss, but I was bored and threw it in my ps3.

That was in May, I returned it sometime around august, I was completely hooked on the "road to the show" mode playing a pitcher. Talk about a fun game of chess :p

Try it out, you just might like it :D

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I will def try out the GoW collection and perhaps try and pickup another game from the suggested list.

I'll toss my PSN name in the thread for them as soon as I get setup, should be getting the PS3 sometime between tomorrow and Friday.

I played this game for 2 hours, thought to myself "my god this sucks" and sent it right back to gamefly

Batman Arkham Asylum is multiplatform and awesome, and as someone said all the pixeljunk games kick ass

I agree- if you like baseball games at all- you *have* to get the show '09...or wait for '10. I actually bought my ps3 just to play that game, and was not disapointed.

I just bought the God of war collection and love that as well, can't wait for gow 3
