You said he flies around the house ? Be very careful with that. I had a bird I loved like it was part of the family. We had it for about a year and I had neglected to clip its wings, thinking it was cruel because it loved to fly inside the house. One day the back door was left open and something spooked him and he flew out the back door never to be seen again.

he doesnt fly around mine yet. until i can get him in and out of the cage without losing flesh he is going to stay in the cage.

It's definitely a good idea to keep the wings clipped enough that it can't fly any distance. Even a mild clipping can prevent the bird from flying off, but may still allow it to fly short distances.
Talk to a bird breeder for advice.

We have a few parrots that live around here...apparently escapees from well-meaning people who either didn't know about, or didn't want to clip the wings.

I'm glad to hear you're willing to work with this bird. Most people don't give birds a second thought, and when they do have them as pets, they think a cage life is just how it has to be.

I was previously a dog only person... but once we got our first bird, I was amazed at how much personality they have. So we adopted another, then another, etc. Ours are only in their cages when we're not home... the rest of the time, they're free to roam in their own room, get plenty of exercise and have a huge playgym. They'll come out to have a snack or even watch TV with us.

Hope the training/retraining goes well!

I don't know that flying's all that great. It seems special to us because we can't do it, but I bet a bird looks at us and wishes he could run fast on the ground.

thank you. my daily dose of stupid has been received. this is quite literally the dumbest thing i have read. ever single person in this thread is now dumber for reading that.

There is a flock of parrots here. I see them flying around with the blackbirds. Its rather unusual.

We had a double yellow for a long time. Originally given to me as a gift by a breeder friend, the bird bonded strongly with my mom. As my mom got older, she just couldn't keep up with the attention the bird wanted/needed. Gave the bird away; they're a real commitment.

he will allow us to touch him when he wants it. he will sit next to the bars of the cage on his perch, if approach he will grab the bars with his beak and just stay there. then and only then will he allow me to stick my finger in and scratch his head. he loves it because he closes his eyes and enjoys it. when he has had enough he will pull back like a snake ready to strike. I better have my finger away...
