I'm ordering my daughter a Wii for Christmas.
Is there anything I should know before I buy?
Sounds like there is more than one version and the newer version has a sleeve so that the controller doesn't slip in your hand.(???) Also sounds like some models come with 4 controllers? No?

Anything I need to know before I buy?

I don't know any models that come with 4 controllers and they should all come with the Wii-mote condom now. There are probably bundles that come with more controllers.

Some places (like costco) have special bundles, but those aren't different 'versions' like they are on the xbox and playstation side of things. They're just packs the store threw together.

All the consoles are the same, and come with 1 remote, and 1 nunchuck. All new systems ship with the sleeve for the remote, or you can get them for free if you have a older system. You don't have to use them. I actually find it more comfortable not to use them, plus they interfere with the batteries on the charge station I have.

Either get rechargeable batteries, or a charger like the Nyko charge station. The remotes use up the batteries pretty fast. If your going to be playing Virtual Console games I would pickup a Classic Controller, or the Nyko Wing. Also a Gamecube controller, and a memory card are a must if she wants to play any Gamecube games on the system. If you need a extra remote it might be a good ideal to pickup Wii Play. Its $10 more than the remote, but comes with a game.

Alright thanks for all the info. Picked one up on ebay for $325 new/sealed.
When I was a kid I would dream that someone bought me a game console for Christmas but nobody ever did.:frown:
My daughter(9) has been asking about Wii's for six months and I've been telling her she's going to have to work and pay for it herself.
So she's been working and saving money but I figure I might as well buy her one for Christmas since I never got one. Anyway I haven't had a console since the PS2 first came out so I figure this will be fun for the whole family.
(Never used a Wii before)

Me, too. I'd dream about it. You know I once got an Atari 2600 when the Nintendo NES was already out. How pathetic is that? That's not like getting a PS2 when the PS3 is out but getting a PS one. Damn tragedy.

My kids are also getting a wii from my mother this year. I didn't know that gamecube games could be played on the wii, that is what you are saying right? Are the disks that the wii uses the same small disks as the gamecube? Is there any adapters needed for the gamecube controllers when using them on the wii?

It's funny because when I was about 21 my little brother bought me a PS1 and it was the best present anyone ever got me because it fulfilled a childhood dream.:D

No the Wii games are not small like the Gamecube ones, but the slot load drive will take in Gamecube games. On the top of the system (if you have it in the stand) there are 2 doors. One has a slot for 2 Gamecube memory cards, the other has 4 Gamecube control ports. You just plug in a memory card, and a controller. Then put the Gamecube game in the Wii like you would a Wii disc. On the disc channel it shows Nintendo Gamecube, and you can start the game. The Wii basically becomes a Gamecube when you do this, and the Wii remotes, etc... don't work until you restart the system.

Also some Wii games can use Gamecube controllers. Smash Bros Brawl and Mario Kart Wii are two of them. You can also use Gamecube controllers to play Virtual Console games, but the button layout isn't great for some titles.
