Getting a new TV tomorrow, kind of excited.

The best for analog TV is anything 27" or smaller.

Blowing up a 640x480 resolution image (that's analog TV) makes it worse & worse the larger the screen you put it on. Sad, but true. It's a downside of owning a large television.

Congrats, though!

You need a digital cable box with HD tuner to make use of your new TV. Standard Def, in most cases, will look worse on an HD Monitor, since they will show all the imperfections that a regular TV won't.

What if the content is in HD like ESPN or one of the other 10 😉 HD channels out there?

You still have to be on the HD affiliate channel of that broadcast. For the channels you watch now, even though for some programming (like basketball) they say it's being broadcasted in HD, that's not the case until you turn to the Network Channel's HD affiliate (ex. HBOHD instead of the regular HBO channel)

Right, I understand that.
