getting a new tv, need advice!

So we're getting a new tv because ours is really busted. It works, but barely. We're limited in size by our entertainment center, so the absolute maximum width for a tv is 27". After looking at bunch we decided on a 24" Toshiba flatscreen. The same size Sony WEGA was choice #1, but unfortunately it's a bit too wide. Anyhow, Best Buy has two of these, last year's $199 and this year's $299. I called up BB and they assured me there was no physical difference aside from the fact that one was made last year. I'm wondering which model I should go for (obviously the $199 if they are identical) and if I should avoid Toshiba or not. I don't really know much about tvs. I tend to stay away from the unheard-of brands due to my ignorance. There's also a 27" Panasonic I was looking at (the non-HDTV sells for about $250, the HDTV version is a lot more). Anyway, any insight would be great! Also, should I bother with HDTV? How many channels actually use it? This isn't the be all end all tv, just something that works until we move on to bigger and better things.

Thanks Amused. I saw that one but right now it's out of our price range. How advantageous is HDTV these days anyway? As in, how many channels actually make use of it? If I'm correct, I'd have to drop another $100-200 on an HDTV receiver on top of that.
