Getting a new top of the line notebook, semi-portable.

So I'm helping my dad pick out a new laptop. Price isn't really that big of a deal. He just wants something that is pretty light and portable and meets the following requirements:

14" screen (or "widescreen") (My requirement is that it is capable of some serious high resolution, because I will probably inherit this laptop some day)
2.0 GHz 2 Duo Core processor
2 gig Ram
120 gig hard drive
128MB NVIDIA GeForceGo 7200
etc.

Any specific laptops you guys know of? Deals are good as well.

Asus A8JS goes beyond that for $1500. It will be out soon. It has a 14" Screen, 2 ghz Core 2 Duo, 2 gig ram, 100 gb hdd?, 512mb 7700 go, ~$1500. Link

Adding in that GPU reduces your options in business-class notebooks, which are going to be the quality ones with high res screens. Why do you want a Go 7200? Draws more power than integrated, doesn't perform much better, video acceleration is negligible unless you want to watch high def content.

I say go with GMA950, MR X1300, or whatever comes on the business notebook of your choice.

Won't be thin & light or have good battery life, probably also run hot considering the GPU in that form factor, but a very powerful machine for the form factor.

You've got a point. I wasn't really aware that the Geforce Go reduced the res options and such like that. I was just thinking quality. Thanks.

Its not that the GPU itself reduces option, it is that business mfrs (A) don't use NV GPU's most of the time and (B) restricting yourself to that GPU reduces the options as to which notebooks are equipped with the high res screens, not that the NV GPU can't handle high res or anything; just to clarify.

ThinkPads use ATI's Mobility Radeon X1300/X1400 and some Dell's use NVIDIA QuadroGo NVS chips (business-class GPU), those are your best bet for a quality machine with high res screen.

Apparently the whole point of the 7700 is that it uses less power and lets off less heat. We'll see how good the battery life is and how hot it actually is...

Less battery life than other comparable models yes ... it's definitely going to suck a lot more juice than a GMA950. 😛
