I'm taking the plunge and upgrading my monitor. My trusty old trinitron bit the dust today, which is fine, becuase I've been wanting to upgrade anyway. I am almost positive I want to go LCD. As far as price goes, I'm looking to get a 17" for around $600. The monitor will be used for word processing, gaming, internet surfing, multimedia (DVD, music, etc...). I have done a fair amount of research and as of right now, I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the Samsung 173P. This got excellent reviews wherever I've read them. From everything I've read, its an excellent monitor.

My only concern with an LCD is dead pixels. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, and I would be very dissapointed with even one dead pixel upon delivery. I know that Newegg requires eight or more dead pixels in order to do an exchange...the thought of having seven dead pixels and not being able to do anything about it fills me with dread. I am waiting on a response from amazon.com in regards to their return policy. Anyway, what do you folks think of the 173p? Are there any other monitors you might recommend? Any and all comments are appreciated.

I agree with you, my friend has a 17" LCD and it has one dead pixel. SO annoying whenever i use it. So for them to require 8 before you can RMA is just stupid.

I recommend you buy a CRT if you're looking at 17" lcds for $600.. For that amount of money you could get a nice 21-22", not worry about dead pixels, etc

i second the refurbished giant monitor. i just purchased a refurbished Compaq 21" P1100 (Trinitron) Flat Screen Monitor for what a brand new Viewsonic 19" monitor would have cost me. This seems to be the only piece of equipment that has not given me any problems on my new system.....yet... beware though...these things are huge... i need someone else to help me lift it...
