Well i have this modem that will drop a connection every hour or so, and its very frustrating. Also, my speed has dropped from 500kb/s+ to <100kb/s. It's about time to get a new cable modem and tell comcast to eat their $5/mo.

Anyway just need to know what i should be looking for in a cable modem. From what i hear the Motorolla surf boards are very good, and newegg has one for around $70. Thoughts?

First off, check your line. Most modems have a web based diagnostic page that you can access (my 3com sharkfin is 192.168.100.1). Try that first and make sure your line quality hasn't degraded to the point that the modem can't maintain a reliable signal.

if you're paying 5 a month for the modem then Comcast should be responsible for it. Call them and have them help you diagnose the problem. It's their equipment, afterall.

Yes, i have already done that and had a comcast guy come out and check the line, i did it myself as well, everything was very good. The cable modem is only split to 2.5db from the main outside. There really wasn;t an explaination for the speed loss, because there wasn't any packetloss nor was the line in bad shape.

Then my modem started shutting off all the time, the power connector had never worked that great to being with, i bet it isn't the right adaptor and so its slowly killing the modem. Just going to buy a new one since for around $70, only 14months worth of payments it will have paid for itself.

Sounds like a plan, as a last resort you might check with your ISP to see if they'd swap the modem. I have RR and the one time I had problems with my modem I went down the street and swapped it for a good one, no questions asked. I walked in and came out with a new modem in 2 minutes, super easy.
