I'm thinking Crysis (have the demo), cod4, or Supreme Commander. I've spent a lot of time on FPS games the last few years, (bioshock, hl2, farcry, oblivion, fear, cod2) and haven't played a strategy game since I was a teenager. I probably invested over 2,000 hours on Civilization 1 & 2 over several years time back then, and would like to try a new strategy game, so I'm really leaning towards SupCom. That said, people are raving about crysis and cod4 so I'm kind of torn. I probably won't buy another game for a few months.

Opinions?

If you like the style of CNC games, then CNC3 is great. I never really got into SupCom even though I loved Total Annihilation.

I'm really liking Crysis, and the mod community is getting ramped up. There are a couple physics based maps out so far.

Cod4 = good multiplayer
Crysis = good single player

Crysis is beautiful. That said, I thought the single player campaign was awfully short, and pretty darn easy. The game's not bad, just not all it's cracked up to be.

I'm interested to see some of the mods you're talking about though - got any links?

I haven't played COD4 or SupCom, so I can't give any input on those.

of those 3 - CoD4

Crysis is garbage. Only played the demo of SupCom but I couldn't get into it. I'd rather play something like C&C3.

Get the Dawn of War series (RTS genre) if you haven't.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War (the original)
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War -Winter Assault- (the first expansion pack)
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War -Dark Crusade- (the second expansion pack)
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War -Soulstorm- (the third expansion pack, which will be released soon)

you can pick up the Warhammer triple pack for 30 bucks - has -

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War (the original)
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War -Winter Assault- (the first expansion pack)
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War -Dark Crusade- (the second expansion pack)

I like that alot so far - better than C&C3 IMO

Thats it in a nutshell really. I say get crisis rather than cod4 but if your really into your FPS's like i am you would get both!

If your really wanting a new strategy game sup com and c&c 3 are OK, not fantastic though. Company of heros gets my vote, the multiplayer on that is a blast!

Here is my take.

FPS, get STALKER (3rd most creepy game i've played, right after AvP 1/2 play as the marine). I'll let others rant on about COD4/Crysis, but i will say that COD4 will bore the hell out of you if your getting tired of FPS's.

Supreme Commander is great with the MASSIVE maps with hundreds/thousands of units in play, 3D graphics (press the space bar to swivel the camera when zoomed in) and... well epic battles. You control armies rather then small groups of units. But i would get something else because it can burn you out if you play it a lot, campaign and skirmish maps can take a while to do (1+ hours). Also note that it's a system hog.

I've been meaning to try Warhammer RTS's, but only tried the winter assault demo. Might be good to get a game bundle for this. I tried Command & Conquer 3 but quickly lost interest.

You could also try Homeworld 2, it's a bit old by now but it's a very refreshing RTS.

World in Conflict is the BF2 of RTS's, very easy to get into online play without getting your ass handed to you a great deal. Single player is only a advanced tutorial for multiplayer though. Also 3D and can be very fun to just spectate and warch the carnage online.

Company of Heros rocks as well. It's tempting to say it's better then supreme commander, but the 2 games are completely different.

Then Black and White 2, where you play as a god guiding your people. Best decribed as similar to the Total war series, but city vs city and you build up your city like in sim city.

Then there is the Total war series, like Civilization but with RTS battles.

Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries (stand alone, superior the MW4) is also a very good game, a little old by now though, nothing quite beats stomping around the mech of your choice with the weapons and squad members of your choice. One of the very few games i've ever replayed 3 times. If you really want old school there is Mech commander RTS style movement but you have what you started each mission with.

Then there are RPG's, i'm currently going through Neverwinter Nights 2 and am enjoying it. If you do get it, you should also install the expansion "Mask fo the betrayer" as it adds new content and fixes problems that will also transfer to the original NW2.

THEN there are the MMO's. Main ones now are Wow, Guild wars, EvE, Pirates of the Burning Sea, Lord of the Rings Online, EverQuest 2, Final Fantasy XI, City of Heroes/City of Villains , Tabula Rasa, Dungeons & Dragons Online , RuneScape. I can't give any useful advice other then look into how each game plays yourself. I've stopped playing MMO's because i can't stand grinding, but Age of Conan/Darkfall (if DF is not vaporware) i will try in hopes of a fun game this time around.

The Total War expanions Kingdoms is a really good buy. I spent at least a week each on each of the 4 campaigns. It should really last you a while.

Also, Stalker is great if you don't have it yet. It was my goty, and has some replay value.

I'd pass on Crysis and CoD4. Both are short SP wise. The latter has supposedly better MP. If you had to pick one, CoD4 wouldn't be bad. My faith and love for Crysis is starting to wane cause I dislike the MP and only half the SP is good. Its performance is really discouraging too.

I'm playing through Crysis now... the game is a lot better than I expected, gameplay is pretty open and combat is satisfying as are the weapons and the graphics are really amazing and help immerse you in the game tremendously. I can now officially say IGN AU are idiots, they bashed Crysis for having steep requirements... but the truth is any decent computer (I'm talking about midrange here not 4000$ sli rigs) can run the game at medium with high shaders/postprocessing and even at those settings it's still better looking than anything else out there and loading times are pretty swift (under 30 seconds for a long-ass level).

agreed. i have a midrange (sub midrange, even) computer and i ran 1280x1024 on medium, looked fantastic, and chugged in a few parts (only a few).

i gotta say...the tank battle is one of my favorite parts. but if you don't like reloading, don't play on "delta" skill level :p

<Sigh>. My beloved Unreal Tournament...perhaps the greatest online multiplayer FPS of all time...is chopped liver.

How about the Unreal Anthology (includes the original and excellent single player Unreal, the original and amazing Unreal Tournament (1999), Unreal Tournament 2004 (still lots of folks playing Onslaught and Invasion-Monster-Hunt-RPG), and the single player Unreal 2).

Alternatively, consider Unreal Tournament III. If you can put up with the consolized user interface and server browser, you might really enjoy the game play. The Warfare game type is worth the price of admission alone, IMHO. A UT99 style DOMination mod is also under development and that was a wild, intense game type. (That's right--with the UT games you can download thousands of user-made maps and mods...and custom maps and mods will be available for UT3 soon, too.)

Well I decided on SupCom, and played it for several hours last night and maybe an hour today. It's awesome, and I'm pretty happy with the purchase. I really needed a change of pace from FPS.

There are some great recommendations here though, and I'll start checking out some of these other games too. I think I tend to spend too much time on each game, and I'd probably get more out of gaming if I branched out some more.

Thanks everybody.

I hated Spam Commander at first but it did get a lot more enjoyable near the end of each campaign and its also a lot of fun online. Gogamer.com also had Forged Alliance, the xpac, for $20 so might want to see if they still have it for cheap. If you're looking for more RTS fix in the future, I'd also highly recommend World In Conflict. I found its engine to be superior to both SC and CoH and also had an excellent campaign and storyline as well.
