Getting a new bike!

after my birthday on friday, ive decided to buy a mountain bike so i could join some family on some trail rides, etc.

if there are any riders in here, what sort of helmets and protective gear do you use on such rides? and im thinking i might also need a light for when i ride at night. i live in california, so im not sure if 1 type of light may be illegal vs another.

im really excited. the bike i chose is a specialized hardrock (2007) sport disc. i was looking at the rockhopper but my cousins suggested the hardrock for the durability.

also, what about security? what do you use to lock your bike up? i live in an apartment complex, and id rather not leave it downstairs chained with all the other bikes outside. so im thinking some type of hook inside of my apartment to hang it up.

its been a while since i had a bike (14 years), so any input is appreciated. thanks in advance

For a lock I would suggest one of these.

Eugene Or is (per capita) the bike theft capitol of the US and these are the locks I recommend to people when they buy a bike from me.

i would suggest the rockhopper. I weight 245lbs and i take that bike everywhere, now that's durable. I've climbed stairs and went down stairs, and have taken 3 ft jumps. hehe, 3ft jumps doesn't sound like a lot, but it was cool at the time i did it!

Well, i'd say a rock hopper comp disc is good. a hard rock is too heavy.

Yeah, one of those or a Kryptonite. Just check out your local bike store. Almost all of the employees are at least semi-hardcore bikers, and they'll probably be happy to help.

Also, try to get a cable thats long enough to go through your wheels as well as the frame. Its annoying, but if your in a setting where you're bike might get stolen, some people will be jackasses and take the wheels if they can't steal the entire bike.

from what i hear the hardrock is more durable and the rockhopper is lighter, but i did ask about the rockhopper and it was $400 more
