Getting a lot of background noise from computer speakers...

It's either (in order of biggest contributor)

1) your sound card (or integrated audio)
2) devices between your sound device and your speakers/headphones
3) your speakers/headphones

fixes:

1) make sure your sound device says "audigy" on it
2) make sure that you spent at least $100 on your headphones if you use'em and at least $200 on your speakers (if you use them instead)

that's how I got rid of my white noise... believe me... it's mind numbing when you use ventrilo or something. It's really worth it to get quality stuff.

Chances are you are using an onboard soundcard if you hear floor noise. Otherwise, a very cheaply-made soundcard. Either way, stick to something from Creative (if you're a gamer), Voyetra (purely music SQ preference), or M-Audio (for reference-quality sound). NewEgg should have everything you'd need. If you're interested in purchasing a card and need some help/budgeting, give us a hollar. 😉

HOWEVER, there's the chance that the noise you are hearing is from a cheaply-made amp/power supply in the speakers you are using. Best way to see if it's the soundcard is to hook up a nice pair of headphones to the speaker jack on the soundcard. If you hear noise, then it's probably the soundcard. To see if it's the speakers, try another sound source, such as an iPod, Palm Pilot, laptop, CD player, etc.

Good luck!

That always happens with headphones unless you have $$$ soundcard.

But he's saying computer speakers...headphones would only make a crappy soundcard sound worse! 😉
