getting a laptop--should I stay away from hp

saw an hp laptop at sam's for $1800

specs:

p3 800
256 meg ram
20 gig
8xdvd
10/100 nic/ modem
15 tft screen

Question, seems like good price but have had problems with hp desktops in past. Will a dell that is $500 higher be any better?

Buy a toshiba. Unless thats the inspiron 8000, then get that.

I would stay away from HP ins desktops and laptops. I have never had very good luck with them.

we have quite a few hp laptops at work-4150's and 6000's.no problems with them.

Its just that for the price it seems great. Try to get dvd and 256 megs of ram in a dell and your at $2500. the hp does only have s3 savage graphics though, although won't be doing heavy gaming any way.

I'd recommend Dell, Toshiba, or Sony. But I have no experience with HP laptops, so I can't say whether they're good or not.

i personally don't like hp computers because i bought two desktops before and both had problems..i have an sony laptop which is pretty good.

I just got my toshiba 2805-s402 with 384mb ram (got the 256mb ram upgrade cheap for only $59 🙂 bucks )
and I like it very much--no problem so far and it runs great. And as for the pointing device thingy--I have no problems with it- at first it's kindda awkward but after 2hrs i'm getting the hang of it and kindda like it. So basicly people view on the pointy track thingy is pretty much subjective. Some people does lack of fingers flexibility 😱

Hmmm... I guess you guys weren't aware that the Dell Inspirons and the HP Omnibooks are both manufactured by the same company (Compal). I got a Dell Inspiron 8000 and I love it. I was at Best Buy the other day and since I had some time on my hands I checked out all the laptops there and the HPs seemed to be the best. So, I guess I would recommend HP (but not from personal experience.

Now that I've looked around. HP even has the athlon 4 1 gig for only $200 more at best buy. I'll have to check that out. You can't touch those specs in a dell or gateway. sooo, it looks like I'm on my way.

btw--while I appreciate responses it would be nice for detail instead of 'I just don't like them' or 'they suck'

well if you dont really need more powerfull 3d chipset base--there are a lot more choices out there that are more bang for the buck than dell or toshiba.
HP is quite good--i'm looking on hp pavilion n5470 --athlon4 1gig 256meg ram 8meg vram 8dvd/cd-rw combo which is nice!! built in modem and nic. 20 gig hard drive and 15 inch screen. for 2199 before 100 rebate from best buy.

Heck I work for HP, I'm a CSR for Pavilion support(Tier 2), and I wouldn't buy an HP laptop or desktop. (let alone scanners or PDA's, though I do like their Printers and Cameras) Of course I am biased in the sense that people with working computers dont call in, but our processes, and procedures to say the least, suck.
