Getting a HTIB, what do you home theater buffs think

Is component video the best way to go for a DVD player?

Please. Please. Do not buy that. If you're gonna build a stereo system, do it the right way. That's what we're here for. Boxed stereos ALWAYS suck.

Did anyone else read "HTIB" as "DHITB" the first time they read it? 😛

Anyways, don't get it. If anything, get speakers from a reputable used source rather than new. You'll be much happier.

I am not an audiophile by any means.

For me this is leaps and bounds better then the crap I have right now

Explain why an average casual watcher of DVD's and listener of music, who knows crap about home stereo, wouldn't be satisfied with this stereo

Component video is the best way. There is a noticeable difference, IF your TV is large and high quality. If your TV is under 30", there's not much reason to go component, but since a home theater is supposed to last you a while, get it anyways. Just don't buy the cables till you get a TV that needs it.

I've heard good things about the Pioneer VSX-D812 - It's got SVideo ins and outs, so you can hook up several devices (VCR, DVD, Gaming console) and then send the video out to the TV. In fact, it's got damn near every connection you could want.

As for DVD players, I haven't looked into those in a while. Just make sure you get one that's progressive scan. If it plays your MP3 CDs, that couldn't hurt either. And if it is easy to modify to play any region of DVD, even better. You may wanna ask around for DVD recommendations.

For speakers, the sky's the limit - But personally, I avoid Bose like the plague. Don't let anyone talk you into them. I'm a huge fan of Boston Acoustics and Klipsch, but they may be pricey. You COULD look into buying one of those high-end sets of computer speakers, such as the http://www.monkeyreview.com/reviews/review.php?num=255; your best bet is some Home Audio forums. Go there, tell them what price range you're looking in, and they'll help ya out.

Because you could spend the exact same amount of money and get something twice as good.

I suggest you think about your words before you boast such statements...sure, HTIABs aren't that great, but for someone with very little knowledge of what they're getting into, they're perfect. He may not WANT to find the right receiver, speakers, DVD player, cables. And all for $600!? You tell me what you're going to build with that budget, that's "twice as good". Just let the man be, he'll still love it.

$600...5 speakers, one sub, a DVD player with progressive scan and receiver with DTS, DPLII and DD EX? I'm sure you could, but it's probably not worth it for him.

edit: I was too bitchy. sorry. 🙂

As for a response, you'll be fine...you could do better, in terms of HTIAB, but it's a good place to start with...once you get hooked on HT sound, just try to stop the upgrade bug. 😉

I thought Bestbuy.com said $800?

Ah. Dude, I thought you said you were GOING to look into getting it. I didn't realize you already bought it. No sense in me giving you any reason to have buyer's remorse. ;-)

I actually haven't gotten it. My parents are pitching in some for it to be my birthday present

I severly doubt I will have buyers remorse over this

Well, what's the ETA on the purchase? If you have more than 2 days before you plan on getting it, give us some time and we'll whip up something that'll come in around $600 and outmatch that one. The final decision, of course, lays with you, I mean, we're not gonna come over there and MAKE you buy something else. ;-)

Yeah seriously...

We just have to match up

Receiver
DVD player
6.1 Setup
Cables (the ones in there are worthless anyways - it's all 24 ga)

I would say that the DVD player can be sacrificed as it's not critical - get a Norcent or whatever $40 one.

Receiver - probably a Pioneer VX series or a Yamaha ... Yamaha 5560 would probably run you $250-$300. I think an Onkyo SR600 is also at that range. Then I guess w/ the rest, you might benefit from the Fluances. ($250) I normally wouldn't recommend Fluances but for this type of price range they'll definitely outperform those pathetic cubes. Those aren't 'Digm Atoms, you know..

Anyways - that's less than $600 for something that'll produce better sound. I mean, the main thing here is to get out of those ghetto speakers. That Yamaha 5560 is the same one in that kit I believe. It would be to your advantage to part it out. Oh yeah, 12ga cable will run you around $50 I think either on Ebay or Home Depot or Lowes. If you want to go a bit cheaper, get 14 or 16ga. Make sure it's Oxygen Free.

My main reason for getting this setup is that

1. I get a great discount
2. It looks like it will more then suite my needs and wants for a stereo
3. If I am not mistaken I can easily upgrade any part of the stereo (speakers, receiver, etc)

I thank you all for having so much concern on this topic. I know know that if/when I ever decide to go to a more high end system I will first check in here for some opinions.

I'll be sure to let you know how I think it sounds as soon as I get it set up.

Can anyone suggest a movie that will take full advantage of what my stereo has to offer? In terms of sound reproduction?

Also can I play DVD-Audio disks on this or any dvd player?

HTIB is a great idea for someone who's just getting into the world of home theater. I got started with one in college. Just built up off it slowly upgrading each component afterwards. Now my original HTIB is the sound system for my computer and my built up system is in the living room.

If you're a home theater newbie its not a bad way to go.

Component. And no one should really use the component in and outs on a receiver anyway, go directly from player to tv.

Right, the Onkyo HTB 650 frequently gets the highest ratings and reviews (for htib systems). Even the nuts over at hometheaterforum admit that it sounds pretty good. Can't beat it for $499. Circuit City stocks them. I have one, have had no problems, love the sound, it even plays DTS.

My TV has 1 component video connection and I think 2 or 3 s-video hookups.

I am planning on connecting everything to my receiver and my receiver to my tv with the component connection

What's the best way to go for audio? Is it optical digital cable?

Optical or digital coax are both fine...it's mostly just personal preference (there are slight differences)...they're both better than analog. 🙂

can someone answer these questions:

what's the point of having video inputs and outputs on audio receiver?

what's the difference between rca a/v wires and component wires?
