Picked up a website in here about audio

avsfourm

Was wondering about something that I could stalk(website) for information about LCD's, Plasma and DLP's. So much out there to chose from and I really don't know which type of TV would work best. I live 2 or 3 hrs drive from a big city so I don't want to go there until I have some kinda knowledge about all of this. (salesman could sell me anything :confused;)

thanks

AVS actually is audio and video :)

Display Devices

The amount of information can lead you to info overload, but take your time. There are tons of + and - for all four usual suspects in the video world.

Usually, the first good step is for you to determine your requirements:
1. Budget
2. Size of screen
3. Color fidelity - what is acceptable to you?
4. How far from screen will you be?
5. Do you need 1080P etc?

You have a ton of reading ahead of you, but answering at least a couple of the above questions will really help in narrowing down your choices. :)

AVS is a great resource but be careful, it could make you anal about the tiniest imperfection that you would have otherwise NEVER noticed. I enjoy my Plasma much more now that I stopped following the forum thread about it. ;)

I would also add to Tiamat's list:

-What do you want to use the TV for? Movies, High Def Movies, TV, Games, Computer Use?
-How much uncontrolled light (sun light, street lights) comes into the room it will be in?

Wow. I almost asked those EXACT two questions yesterday, when I saw this thread. Good post.

AVS can make you obsess over little things, but it can be invaluable understanding what you have.

Wow....I bet I spent over 3 hours reading in basically 2 threads in their flat panel plasma thread. Seems like Pio is introducing a new line (some are already out). Very hard to describe everything off the top of my head but what is being said by these guys this is gonna be a kicka$$ panel. I thought I would get a Pana but after reading through some of that stuff I gotta lean towards the Pio.

Thanks again guys for giving me the lead to help me in making a decision :)

I agree with Tiamat. Budget is the greatest most important factor. What are you willing to spend?

#2 and #4 go hand-in-hand. If you're sitting 12-15' from the screen, then a 27" widescreen will not cut it.

I refer to this site for screen size, viewing distance, viewing angle etc.

#5 will be answered itself once you determine #2. I say this with 3 month old knowledge, but I believe the saying still applies; anything over a 42-46" screen, then go with a 1080 set. A viewer will not be able to resolve 1080 content on a smaller display (under 42-46").

Good luck and have fun!
