I'm going to Europe for a couple weeks this summer, and I have decided to pick up a digital camera. I've done a little bit of research and narrowed it down to either the Fujifilm FinePix 2600 or the Olympus Camedia D-510. I'm just interested in an easy to use 'point-and-shoot' camera that puts out decent photos. I'm by no means a hardcore photographer. They both retail at $300. However, the D-510 includes less in the package, only a 8MB Smartcard vs 16MB and it doesn't include rechargable batteries and the charger, so it would end up costing me a little bit more. However, I've heard that the D-510 has slightly better image quality.

Does anyone have any personal experience with either of these cameras? I would appreciate any input. Unfortunately, since I'm a high school student, I'm not looking to spend anymore than $300 on the camera. If anyone knows of any other good models in my price range, feel free to mention them.

Thanks!

there is a preview for the coolpix. you'll be hard pressed to find any consumer/prosumer camera's that have better lenses than Nikon. They are one of the best. BTW, that first link I gave you also includes the shipping and a 64MB CF card apparently. I have a Nikon Coolpix 995. Amazing camera

Awesome! I didn't notice the free 64MB flash card. Now I'll definately going to consider it. Thanks for the suggestion!

When buying a digital camera, don't bothing considering whether it has a 16MB or 8MB CF card. Both are equally useless.

a 16MB CF card holds 16 LF or 32 MF pictures. To me, that's not nearly enough.

If you're price shopping, Pricegrabber.com is a great place to compare prices, plus they have user ratings right there on their site.

BTW, I know it's out of your price range, but I just wanna rave about my new Canon S30. It was $450 (there has been a price drop, and you can get it for $413 now)delivered with battery and charger from Buydig.com. The features and quality of this thing are amazing, and the image quality is outstanding. It has all the features of a Canon G2, yet it fits in my pocket!!!

OK, I'm done :)

[edit] Price grabber tells me you can get a finepix 2600 for $259 delivered, a D-510 for $244 delivered, and a Coolpix 2500 for $347 delivered.

Buydig.com rules, that's where I got my Canon S300 from. I've seen S30 and it's oh so sexy with seemingly many more features than my S300. But it's bulkier, unfortunately... :(

I have had the Olympus Camedia D510 since October and have been nothing but pleased with it. Great picture quality, easy to upload pictures to the computer (USB cable directly from the camera), easy to use. It takes 4 AA batteries, but they last a good amount of time. I got a 128MB Flash memory card, so I can take ~260 pictures at 1600x1200 with good quality (second to highest setting). :p

I'm nothing but happy with it!

I would also go with the fuji, I bought one in november and it has been great so far. With the deal I found, I got a 64MB card, a case, an extra set of batteries, all for less than $300. It takes as good of pictures as I need, and its really easy to use. If you want to see some pics I took with it, check out my site @ www.242.hostmb.com, look in the picture page. And just so you don't think they look crappy, some are actually pics of real pics, and they have all been compressed from 1600x1280. Hope this helps.
