Getting a 2nd computer and need to network them both.

Ok so im finally gettin a new computer 2.2 ghz (wowza thought it would never come!) Ok so I need a way to connect both with 1 IP address with the USB ports. Only routers I have seen (was told that a router was the best way to go if i only had 1 IP address) have only phone-like jacks. My modem is a USB modem. What do I need in order for both PC's to run and use the internet at the same time?

Old PC has 2 USB, 2 Serial ports, no NIC. Would like to know a good router and the cables i will need. Thanks in advanced 🙂

I suppose the first question is, how are you connecting to the net now?

If you are using dial up, you need to do internet connection sharing (Win98se+ only).

If you are using cable, you need the cable modem connected to the router and then the router connected to each PC using Cat 5 Twisted Pair cabling (use this for all external cable connections). You would need to put a nic into the old PC. The phone-like jacks are actually a little bit bigger and are called RJ-45 connectors. You're new PCs usb modem should work if it has a RJ-45 connector on it.

Good luck,

Currently on ADSL through a USB only modem. I figured these cords would work with this router but i dont know what to do form here:

Router

NIC

Cords

anythign else i might need/change?

-Im not sure about the cords, i need a 50ft cord...

You are going from USB modem to PC1's USB port, then to internal NIC on PC1 to Internal NIC on PC2. I don't see where the router comes into the picture since you have a USB modem and the router is RJ-45 unless I missed something in the description.

I would think the two NICs and a cross-over cable would do the job for you if you have ICS on the PC with the connection to the modem.

what os are you using?

in terms of networking 2 pcs...
the easiest/cheapest way to do this is to use twisted/crossover cat5 cable to nic on each computer.

just to make sure i understand your situation correctly...
you have an usb only external adsl modem...
meaning... you have an external modem with telephone line going into the modem and usb line coming out from it... and usb into your computer.

if your modem's only output is usb...
then your router listed below won't do you much good.

the reason why you would want to go with a router is ...
in most practical sense...
'cause you don't want to have one computer on all the time... in order for other computers to get internet.

if you don't mind keeping one computer on all the time... then, go with CrossOver cable set up.

pc 1 (this computer needs to be on in order for pc2 to have access to internet)
- USB cable linked to external modem.
- PCI Nic

pc 2
- PCI Nic

Link the two PCI Nic with Crossover cable.

depending on your windows version...
you can even setup a network over usb port, or firewire port.
not as proven as 10/100 setup... but still doable.

1st PC is W98se 2nd one will most likely be XP. Can you provide a link to the crossover cable and the NICs I will need? Thanks, im new to networking but everything else comes easy. And yes USB only from the Modem. Thanks for your help 🙂 gettin the comp tomarrow I hope 🙂

I am in the same situation, and am going to order the crossover cable soon too. You can pick it up at any (large) computer store (CompUSA and MicroCenter come to mind) or off of Newegg or any other site. For the NIC's, any NIC card will do (Newegg's selection). If you go 100MB, make sure both cards are 100 MB. For me, I don't need anything more then 10MB(a second, that is), so I don't want to spring for the (more expensive) 100MB cards.
