Getting a 2nd cat, does gender matter?

I have a girl cat who gets along smashingly with kids, dogs, cats, even birds. I'm thinking of getting a 2nd kitten and have heard that 2 female cats is a bad idea - true?

I would maybe not get a 2nd if it's a kitten. Generally, it's advised to get an older cat, for another older cat.

I gave my 2yo female, two 3 month old boy kittens. Did not work so well for about a month (she pretty much tried to murder them at all times) and then once she accepted them, pretty much never wanted to be near them. They however, loved her and tried to play with her all the time.

male cats stink even when fixed

LOL, what? I don't think you can stereotype it like that.
For males, make sure they get fixed when they are kittens (6-8 weeks).
In general, males will get along with females better. 2 females can get bitchy and territorial.
I've always had female, until our newest, my first male. Our female allowed him in the house no problem after keeping them segregated for a week.
Also, one thing I always heard, and now believe, is that males are in general nicer, and more friendly.

Older cats that have been alone for a long time often react that way to new cats regardless of their age/sex.

Sorry. Male cats typically stink even when fixed.

Our three (female cats) get along swimmingly. They're all fixed though.

Well, okay, one of them is a bit of a jerk sometimes, but it's not just to the other two cats. And she's usually okay, she just gets in moods.

It can be more work, but you should first consider a rescue from the pound.

Add a cat trick, put a strong scent on both of them, like perfume, so that by the time it wears off they are used to each others smell.

I hate to say something sexist, but that's the reasoning behind my post! I had 2 male cats and both of them had to be rehomed because they were kinda dicks. I'd prefer two girl cats but the resident cat lady of the family says it's a terrible idea.

Are you sure it's not the gender of the cats, but just those specific cats? My mom loves cats, so consequently, I grew up around them. Based on my experiences, whenever I hear people say that cats are assholes, I assume that they were just around an onerous cat. Unless you get a cat of a specific breed that's usually very docile (like a Ragdoll/Ragamuffin), it's kind of a guessing game on whether the cat will be really friendly or not.

I will not get 2 female cats, I am a foster parents and I will not do two adult female. Kitten might work but I will not risk it, get a male.

Sorry. Male cats typically stink even when fixed.

Mine haven't unless they were stressed the fuck out and they sprayed. When life was normal they were fine.

I have a 1.5 year old male that has never sprayed. But of course he is fixed.

OP: As long as you get the kitty spayed or neutered, it will be fine. The important thing is to make sure you get another litter box, another food dish, another bed, etc. Also when new kitty comes home, pay extra attention to old kitty. She's going to take a bit to adjust to the change.

I have a pretty old cat who has been through dogs, cats, kids, you name it. She honestly doesn't give 2 shits as long as her food bowl is full and her litter is clean. If someone or someone does something she doesn't approve of, she'll go lay on a pile of clothes.

She was not alone much. I had 2 cats previous to her, and she lived with them since day 1. She was only a lone for about.. 6 months, prior to getting the new kittens.

Cats can be tough to introduce to other new cats. It has to be done slowly and safely. Odds are it will be fine either way, but they may not become best pals.

All girl cats is fine. But an older female cat with a male kitten/cat is not fun from my experience. Even though he is fixed and has been fixed since when we got him, he still tried to dominate the female.

I also had to start letting him out of the house as he is an asshole. Knocking stuff off counters, attacking the female, etc. I let him out before I go to bed and my wife let's him back in when she gets up in the morning. He loves spending the night hunting and running around. He needed it and he is a super sweet cat now. The first thing he does when he comes in in the morning is come snuggle with me while I get my last 30 minutes of sleep.

I hate cats. My past dog (died years ago) saved me from a thief once.

Cats are lazy and useless in my opinion. I sleep better at night knowing my dog would give up its life to protect my house and me included.

Dogs rule in my book.

yeah, I usually hear that you should get cats of a similar age.

typical adult cats just want to lay around and sleep all afternoon while kitten are bundles of energy that want to fuck around and play... it's like you're forcing a toddler with a bag of sugar on your cat/

It mostly depends on the human contact the cat experiences during the first ~8 weeks of life regardless of gender.
Yeah... we found one under a dumpster at 10 weeks old. She's far from feral, but 'skittish' is an understatement.

Regarding the notion that male cats stink/spray, I will post this. We have 2 male cats and one of them was fixed after he reached sexual maturity. As a result he developed into an adult cat with all of the behaviors and kept these traits even after nuetering. He humps blankets, comforters, clothing left on the floor. He gets boners. He also sprays outdoors only. I saw him spraying some bushes along side my house and when he left I went and sniffed the area; no stink at all.

The other cat was nuetered before reaching sexual maturity. None of the above behaviors are noted in this cat.

He probably sprayed your nostrils while you slept, rendering your sense of smell useless.
